Personal Information    |    All    |    PDF

  • Name John ROSSE
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born
    • I am not sure that John's father was Cuthbert, see John's marriage notes for the reason I think he may have been.
    Gender Male
    Also known as John ROOS
    Died Between 1520 and 1529
    • John must have been living at at least the start of the year from 22 Apr 1520, as he is named as a defendant in a case in the Court of Requests that year.
However, in a Chancery Court case at some time no later than 1529 Agnes' husband was named as John Ogan.

    Family Mistress Agnes HERON,   b. Est 1500,   d. Between 8 Feb 1574/75 and 30 Apr 1575  (Age ~ 75 years)
Other Partners: John WOGAN, Esq. [parents?]  m. Between 1520 and 1529
    Married
    • In the will of Agnes' last husband John Wogan he makes a bequest to his 'sonne in lawe' Nicholas Rose and then another 'unto his [Nicholas'] brother Cuthebert Rose'. Son-in-law could mean step-son, and I think this meaning is the most likely one in this case, because:
      1. It would be unusual to make a bequest to a daughter's husband's brother
      2. The gown bequeather to Cuthebert was to be 'at his mothers rewarde'. It seems unlikely that he would specify that his daughter's husband's mother should make the choice, far more likely that it was his (John's) wife, who he named as sole executrix, who was to choose.

Hence I think that Agnes had 'Rose' sons (other documents suggest the name was more commonly spelt Rosse), and so had presumably been married to a Rosse before she married John Wogan.

By the time Agnes wrote her will Nicholas had died, and although she made her daughter Mary her executrix and residual legatee, it sounds as though nearly everything was to go to 'John Rose son of Nicholas Rose'; unfortunately no relationships are specified.

Looking at the 1623 visitations of Somerset, a Rosse pedigree supports this theory, in that Nicholas Rosse of Shepton Beauchamp (and I think there can be little doubt it is the one mentioned in the wills of John and Agnes Wogan) is shown as having married an Elizabeth Dawbney, with John as their son, not the son of a mother whose maiden name was Wogan.
Although Nicholas' father is named, his mother is not; I assume that James, her great grandson did not know it.
Nicholas' father is shown as Cuthbert, but in a Chancery Court case the husbands of the daughters of John Herton are named; these include a 'John Roos'. I think it more likely that this Chancery document is correct. Nicholas may well be correct in naming an ancestor Cuthbert, often errors in pedigrees are with the generation. It is quite likely that Cuthbert was Agnes' father in law.
