It is the only example I have come across where the two names may have been confused. I don't know how Gawthern is pronounced - Gawt-hern or Gawth-ern? If the former it could more easily be confused with Go(a)tham for which the normal pronunciation of Go(a)tham is (or was) Goat-(h)um.
(Of course the PR scribe may have been thinking Goth-an whereas I am reading Go[a]t-han).
The two names also mostly occur in different parts of Kent, which will have helped reduce confusion. I may look at Gawthern a little in case the two names appear to have a common origin.
