However, the only birth registration to fit is this one:
GRO ref: VANNS, Alice q4 1863 Tunbridge RD 2a 467; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Vanns.
This implies Alice was the child of a Vanns = Vanns marriage. Was this a mistake on the birth certificate, or was Alice a child of Sarah's from a previous marriage?
I can find no evidence of a possible Vanns = Vanns marriage for Sarah, but there may have been a Vanns = Vanns marriage in 1853, between John and Mary Ann. Perhaps Alice was there daughter, and either mistakenly recorded as a Hartnup and daughter of John in the census instead of as a niece with the surname Vanns, or perhaps she was 'adopted' by John and Sarah.
