A Philip Horton had married a Jenny Norris in Cornwood in 1784 ('Philip and Jenny senr'); it is clear they were still having children when this Philip and Jenny started having a family. That Philip was a husbandman at the time of the marriage, but seems later to have been a carpenter. He had died by the time the censuses started, but his son Philip was a carpenter.
The children to work out (baptisms at Cornwood unless shown otherwise):
1. Arthur 1801 and Jenny 1801. Arthur's father shown as a carpenter, Jenny's as a farmer.
Decision: Philip and Jenny senior had had a dau Jenny in 1793; looking at marriage and census records that Jenny appears still to have been living so it seems most probable that this couple were the parents of Jenny.
Also, the cumulative evidence point to the other Philip being a carpenter.
2. Richard 1802 and Elizabeth 1802
Decision: this couple probably the parents of Eliz; a Richard was a witness to Peggy's marriage; being from a large family she was more likely to have a sibling as a witness than some sort of cousin.
(Also P and J senior had already had a dau Eliz; I haven't worked out if she was still living; they'd also subsequently had a Betty who was still living, but may have seen the names as different ones)
3. Phillip 1805 Ermington and John Oct 1804
Decision: Phillip died in 1827 (PR shows age as 22, this is only Philip to fit) - his abode was shown as Fardle, where this Philip and Jenny farmed so he would seem to be their son. Also, it's this Philip and Jenny who seem to have had several children from now on baptised at Ermington.
4. Peggy Dec 1806 and Mary Jan 1807 Ermington
Decision: this couple parents of Mary.
i. Ermington suggest that
ii. 'Jane Horton' who was probably Jenny senior was living in same house as Peggy and her husband (Elias Smerdon) in 1841
iii. When Peggy and Elias married her father was shown as Philip Horton, carpenter.
(P and J senior had a dau Mary baptised 1791 - not yet worked out if still living)
5. Haly 1808 Ermington
Decision: son of this Philip and Jenny.
Ermington suggests that, also P and J senior had son Haly bapt 1789; censuses suggest he was still living in at this time.
(Jenny senior probably getting a bit old now ot have children)
6. Alex 1811 Ermington
Decision: son of this Philip and Jenny.
i. Alexander gave his son Philip the middle name Maddick, only otherwise found in the this Philip.
ii. That son of Alexander seems to have been with this Philip and Jenny at the time of the 1841 census.
iii. P and J senior had son Alexander who was still alive at the time of the 1851 census.
7. Arthur Trobridge 1814
Decision: son of this P and J - with them at the time of the 1841 census.
8. John 1816
Decision: son of this P and J. His marriage PR entry shows him as the son of Philip M HORTON, farmer. No other Philip with middle initial M who could have been the witness is known of.
9. Frances Northmore 1818
Decision: having this Jenny's maiden name as her middle name suggests she was the daughter of this couple; also, a Fanny was with them at the time of the 1841 census who would fit as this Frances.
