Obituary 11 Jul 1891 In the 'Thanet Advertiser' - "The late Mr. Wm. Richmond. - A Correspon-
dent writes under date July 1st as follows: - "Sir,
- Four years ago your interesting journal con-
tained a paragraph giving an account of the
golden wedding of Mr. William Richmond, of Elms
Cottage, The Elms, Ramsgate. As he was such a
well-known and respected person among the resi-
dents of Ramsgate, it might perhaps be of interest
to you to have a very brief note of his life and
death, which latter took place at 12.30 to-day. He
was 78 years of age, and had been married fifty-
four years. He had been chief officer of Shingle-
end, Ramsgate, and other coastguard stations, at
the former of which he once attacked and took six
men in a boat and fourteen ankers of brandy single
handed. He was at one time wounded and thrown
into the sea for dead by smugglers, but was washed
up by the tide and recovered. He was also three
days and three nights on a water-logged vessel in
mid ocean, without food or water, and with several
dead bodies on board. He talked but little of his
own experiences, and consequently but few knew of
his many and exciting adventures; but he was
always known as one of the most clever, brave, and
daring officers in the service. He had been in and
assisted at upwards of forty wrecks, and was
Instrumental in saving nearly a hundred lives. He
passed at 12.20 this day, from the effects of a
poisoned wound caused by a brass nail in a shoe
he had worn."
