Matthew GLANVILLE
Set As Default Person -
Name Matthew GLANVILLE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1520 - Very rough estimate - based on rough estimates of dobs of his children.
If he was the older brother of John-the-merchant-of-Totnes then could possibly be 20 years older.
However, not found in the lay subsidy lists for 1524-7 or 1545; I guess that Matthew was still living 'at home' unmarried and so had no goods or land to be valued.
Gender Male Muster roll 1569 - Presented for goods worth £7.
Lay Subsidy 1581 Ashbury, Devon, England
Lands assessed at £4 Property Abt 1582 Hewton, Sourton, Devon, England
- Although shown as property owned by Matthew at his death (source Chancery Court case C 2/Eliz/W11/11) it was leased to his son Richard and Mathew himself was described as 'of Ashbury' when he died (source Chancery Court case C 2/Eliz/G8/53) .
Residence Abt 1582 Ashbury, Devon, England
- At the time of his death.
Died Abt 1582 - About 1582 according to bill of Chancery Court case in 1596 (C 2/Eliz/W11/11), which describes him as having died about fourteen years before, but Chancery Court case C 2/Eliz/G8/53 (answer of daughter Joanethe younger and her husband) suggests Mathew wrote his will about 1 Nov 26 Elizabeth, i.e. 1584.
Will Abt 1 Nov 1584 Written - Year may not be right; the bill of a Chancery Court case in 1596 suggests he died about 14 years before, i.e. 1582.
No copy of Matthew's will is known of. It may have been destroyed in Exeter in 1942 or have been lost before then.
As well as the date from the Chancery Court case C 2/Eliz/G8/53 we gather:
executrices were his 2 daughters Joanne the elder and Joanne the younger;
overseers were 2 brothers-in-law, Robert Poot and Foulke Ford (the latter was the husband of Alice, Alice probably being the sister of Mathew or else of his wife - from son Henry's will);
left goods and chattells worth £400 (according to bill), £240 (according to answer).
After legacies and bequests to a number of people, residue to be divided between his two daughters.
In my experience it was unusual to make daughters executrices when there were sons, but perhaps Chancery Case C 2/Eliz/W11/11 suggests why (son Henry accused of trying to defraud his brothers of what was theirs). If it was to avoid family arguments, it didn't work, with his daughters the plaintiff and co-defendant in Chancery Court case C 2/Eliz/G8/53, about the execution of this will.

Married Aft 1545 - I am guessing if Matthew had been married by 1545 he would be in the lay subsidy listing for that year, but he is not found there.
Some examples I have seen of a person giving two sons the same name they were clearly sons with different mothers. I don't know if this was usually the case, nor whether it applied to daughters as well.
If it was usual then it would seem probable that Matthew married twice. (Even if not indicated by having two daughters Joanne, it was quite likely at this time).
In the absence of any information about wive(s) I am showing all the children as of one marriage.
