Miscellaneous 1595 Jesus Hospital, Northgate, Canterbury, Kent, England Founder - Otherwise known as Boys Hospital.
The Boys family are very much on the edge of my tree, and I have only added Sir John to it at all due to his founding of the hospital. Hence, I have not and have no plans to do thorough research about this.
There is plenty of information in old books (on Google), but unfortunately they don't quite agree.
A hospital at this time was somewhere the elderly or disabled could live, rather like sheltered accomodation or almshouses. The men were known as 'brothers' and the women as 'sisters'. The number that Jesus Hospital was for is particularly inconsistent in references, but seems to have been about a dozen, 8 men and 4 women, with a separate house for the warden.
There was some precedance for relations of Sir John - either one place for a sister and one for a brother were for his kin, or his kin had preferential treatment, depending on source. Either way, it was for the over 55 year olds. It also seems his family were responsible for appointing the warden; in 1633 when his nephew Edward OWER wrote his will he was the warden.
There was also a school attached to the hospital, with the warden responsible for teaching the children. known as 'out-brothers', 6 of whom were to be apprenticed each year.

I am only including enough to show how the different Kent 'Boys' on my tree were linked, and in particular the children of Thomas and Christian Searles, the only ones who are actually blood relations (so far as I know), Christian being a second cousin to my line.
