  • Name Elias ROWE
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1631
    • If I am right about the will of an Elias ROWE proved 1675 being that of the Elias who married Susan GOATHAM, then Susan's husband had a son named Elias. However, I am not certain whether Susan or another wife was the younger Elias' mother. For the moment I am linking him to Elias and Susan as
      1. I think it likely Elias would pass on his name to his first-born
      2. the date of marriage to Susan suggests there was at least one other child (besides Mary) whose baptism I have not found
      3. children by Elias seniors later wives would be likely to be in Herne, which are online and indexed (although he could have been born during the Civil Wars / interregnum years when there are gaps in the registers)
    Gender Male
    Will 22 Mar 1682/83
    Written
Buried 26 Mar 1683  St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

    • On or after 22 March - between writing his will and his burial. Since he was of Chislet, he probably died there, especially as his death wasn't sudden (he had time to write a will), although he could have been staying with relations in another parish in his final illness.

    • From East Kent marriage index
(see this page in FMP - in this case I think the data is from BTs; PRs only survive from 1764 and I don't think the marriage was by licence since not found in Cowper)
** have I attached the right Elias Rowe to Susan? **
The will of the Elias Rowe who probably died 1675, certainly between 1670 and 1675, suggests from the children and wife named that this was the Elias who married widow Anne Baker and then widow Alice Stark.
A man being left with young children was likely to marry quite quickly and so that the widower of Susan would marry soon after her death in May 1639 does suggest that he was probably the Elias who married in July 1640.
However, I have seen no evidence to confirm this, and a householder Elias Row was buried 22 Oct 1679. At present it has to be possible that that was Susan's widower.
(Finding the baptisms of the children of the Elias who left the will, Elias and Sybill, might help, especially Sybill as it is quite likely that both Eliases would name a son Elias).
