  • Name Mary ROLLE
    Prefix Mrs.
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1628
    • Vivian (Devon Visitations) shows Mary as the daughter of Henry Rolle of 'Heanton' in the Glanville pedigree (p. 412). She does not appear to be in the Rolle pedigree, although it does include the branch of the family in Heanton Satchville in Petrockstowe, i.e. in the Parish in which Mary married. There is a Henry of a suitable age to be her father, but whilst of the right age he was a second son, so did not inherit Heanton and appears to have moved to Shapwick  in Somerset c. 1630. His will, written in 1656, mentions just one daughter, who is described as his 'daughter Rolle', suggesting she had not married (or had married a Rolle), and he also refers to 'my sonne and daughter', suggesting he had just one of each.
Henry's elder brother Samuel, who remained living in Petrockstowe, wrote his will 2 Mar 1646/47 and added a codicil on 10 May 1647. This codicil removes a provision he had made in 1645 for his daughter Mary "whome I have preferred in marriage with a greater p[or]tion".
This Mary married between the writing of the will and codicil. The lack of a likely Henry, the date of Mary's marriage (quite a co-incidence otherwise) suggest to me it is highly probable that Mary was the daughter not of Henry but of Samuel.

"Sr John Davy Baronat ^ of Creedy in Devon in the Parish of Sandleford maryed Margaret Gla[n]vile Widdow of Kilworthy in the Parish of Tavistoke. Ap. 17."
There is clearly a discrepancy here, in that the bride's name is recorded as Margaret and I am showing this marriage as that of a Mary.
It is it being recorded as Margaret that presumably has led Vivian to record it as the second marriage of the sister Margaret of Mary's late husband, Francis.

However, there are problems with that attribution too: Margaret would have been a Kelly when (if) she remarried, not a Glanville. If she had been widowed (and at present I have no evidence she had been) she is unlikely to have been 'of Killworthy', and she may not have been if she been widowed. It is possible she would have been, though, as Killworthy was left by her brother Francis Glanville to her son Francis Kelly.
On the subject of who would have been 'of Killworthy' it is not clear that Mary would been living there either. Where would she have gone after her marriage?

So, two possible remarriages, and problems with both. There are two reasons for believing it was Mary Glanville née Rolle, not Margaret Kelly née Glanville.
Firstly, checking the registers for Sandford shows that Sir John Davie's wife was recorded as Mary when buried. In addition, Exchequer depositions (E134/10Wm3/Mich7; transcription of the relevant part here) concerning Kilworthy and other property held by Mary's first husband Francis Glanville Esqr refer to his widow marrying Sir John Davie. These weren't taken until about 1699, so memories could be a little faulty, but this was referred to by two deponents. I don't know if they might have discussed it before, or one heard the other's depositions and his memory been swayed. Even so, it seems to me that 2 depositions plus a burial record, together with it being very unlikely a widow bride would be recorded with her maiden name, point very strongly to it being Mary, widow of Francis Glanville, who married John Davie.

(Vivian attributes much of the Glanville pedigree to 'Glanville-Richards', Records of the Anglo-Norman House of Glanville; checking this volume it is clear it was Richards who decided Mary was Henry's daughter. Given he is known to have made up facts there is no need to think that there must be some undiscovered source suggesting Henry was Mary's father).

Further evidence for the marriage not being that of Margaret, sister of Francis Glanville, is that no burials can be found for her or her husband in Kelly where they were first living, but there are burials that are probably theirs in Tavistock. This would make sense as with their son Francis dying young his father, William Kelly, would have inherited Kilworthy if still living. (see their entries for details).
