Roger HURRELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Roger HURRELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 26 May 1673 St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 4 June 2016)
"Roger the sone of Mr Roger Hurrell and Mary his wife was baptized May the 26th" - under heading 'Anno Domini 1673'
(the comments 'Mr' and 'and Mary his wife' were added above, not certain if they belong to this entry or the one above, placing makes this entry seem most likely)
I think the baptism was probably of this Roger, since he was described as 'of Charleton' when his wife Elizabeth (née Hurrell) was buried.
Gender Male Residence 1710 Burrough, Charleton, Devon, England
- In a 1710 lease a Roger was described as of Burrough, Charleton - I think that as probably this Roger. In 1729 a Roger of Charleton was involved in an Exchequer case, but the possessions that the case was concerned with included 'Roger Hurrell, late of Burrough'. That could mean that this Roger had by then left Burrough, or it could be a reference to his father.

Buried St. Andrew’s Church, Beerferris, Devon, England

"Roger Hurrel" - under heading '1756'
I've not found any evidence of a Roger Hurrell buried in Charleton, the most likely candiates seem 1736 (West Alvington) or 1756 (Beer Ferris). I think the later is most likely this Roger - there were lots of Hurrells in Aveton Giffard around this time, and in 1723 a Roger signed after a Gertrude of Aveton Giffard - I guess they were close relations (though Gertrude appears to have been married to a John). There were fewer Hurrells in Bere Ferrers; with his wife and daughter buried there I think Roger probably was as well.
Notes - (Research):Parents probably NOT the Roger Hurle and Mary Wellington who married in Stoke Fleming in 1670 (according to FamilySearch) since there were other children of a Roger baptised before this Roger in Charleton - Charles in 1670 and James in 1671; in 1670 the mother's name was given as Elizabeth. On the other hand could be two Rogers, as the 1670 and 71 baptisms were close togher, or Roger could have remarried.
Was Roger a school teacher?
At the time of the 1744 Episcopal Visitation Questionnaire one 'Mr Roger Hurral' was school master in Bere Ferrers.
