  • Name Dionis GLANVILLE
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Between 1557 and 1562
    • Shown as a daughter of John-the-merchant in Vivian (Devon and Cornwall Visitations), information shown as coming from original visitation of 1620 (including that she married a Grilles, then afterwards Charles Glubb) but not mentioned in the will of her father.
Star Chamber case confirms she was the son of John-the-merchant; the Bill suggests she was aged about 16 or 17 at marriage, the answer of her husband that she was aged about 20.

    • A reference to John the merchant in the Tavistock Parish Record book (in 1565) refers to John's wife as Alice. From this book it appears that in the middle of the C16th there were two Johns - 'John Glanfyld, merchant' and 'John Glanfelde at wyll'. Although it seemed likely that this John was a merchant, the continuity of a John as one of the 'eight men' of Tavistock up to the death of this John suggests he was probably 'John Glanville at Wyll', although it is possible that this John was 'John the merchant' and  he became one of the eight men on the death of 'John at Wyll'. It is clearly unsafe to assume that his wfe / the mother of his children was Alice.

Although I show all of his children having one mother, given the number of women who died young at this time, especially in childbirth, John could easily have had more than one wife before Thomasine.

    • I had wondered if it was this Dionisia who married William Grills, but it is now clear that it was.
William Grills named as 1st husband of Dionis, daughter of merchant John of Tavistock, from Vivian, citing 1620 Devon visitation for his surname.
Marriage details from Cornwall FHS transcribed data on FMP (viewed 22 Jun 2016) - shows Duens GLANVILE to William GRILLS.

A reference to the marriage of a William Grills of Launceston to Dyones Glanvile in a case in the Court of Star Chamber on the AALT website described her as 'a woman alone the age of xvj or xvij yeares'. Two bills survive, and having seen the documents it is clear that the AALT did not record the document acurately - it actually says 'about[e] the age of xvi or xvii yeares' (AALT now corrected). There are also numerous references to her brothers, Mr Nicholas Glanvile and Mr Serjeant Glanvile.
(ref. to TNA ref. STAC 5/C3/18 on the AALT website; photographed and transcriptions started but not yet completed or published on this website)

Family 2 Digorye HICKES,   d. Yes, date unknown
    Married From 1587 to 1589
    • Dionis appears to have had an adulterous affair with Degorye when married to William Grills, from about 1586/87 (at least, that's when William became aware of something going on), Diones living with Digorye from about 1587/88, possibly for a few months until the family intervened, possibly until about 1590 or 1591 (when she asked William to take her back).
At the time of writing I am still transcribing the documents in a resulting Star Chamber case, and those providing information do not totally agree regarding the details.
The documents of one or 2 other related court cases, also resulting from the affair, may give additional information, but I have yet to study them.
Married? Not married or evidence to suggest they didn't marry

Family 3 Charles GLUBB,   d. Yes, date unknown
    Married Between 1602 and 1620
    • Charles named as 2nd husband of Dionis from Vivian, citing 1620 Devon visitation.
It seems probable that Charles and Dionis married before 1614 and that Dionis died before 1614, since neither their marriage nor her burial are in the surviving PRs (from 1614, and from what I have seen in good condition and easily read).
Even if Charles and Dionis married in another parish it would seem probable her burial would have been in Tavistock. There were a considerable number of deaths from the plague in Tavistock in the mid-1620s, including of a number of Glubbs. Sickness like this can disrupt the keeping of the registers, but it is not apparent that it did so in Tavistock. Certainly there are no gaps in the register, but of course it is possible individuals entries were forgotten.
BTs survive from 1602 but large chunks are missing; neither the marriage nor Dionis' burial are in those parts of the BTs that survive, 1602-1613. (I have not yet studied which months / years are missing).
