John GILBERT
Set As Default Person -
Name John GILBERT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1475 - His father's second son, first by his second marriage.
Shown as aged 60 year and more when he died in 1539. (Clearly 60 would suggest born about 1479, but these older ages appear to me often to be round ones).
From a read through of his father's will I don't think there was a mention of anything conditional on him reaching the age of 21 (unlike for his brothers, Otys, William and Geffery), so I wonder if he had already reached it and so was born no later than 1472. (If his brother Thomas had also reached the age of 21 then John, the eldest, must have been born even earlier).
Gender Male Died 1 May 1539 - Date in Vivian, presumably from IPM.

Shown in Vivian (p.405) but I am a bit dubious about whether this Otes and Elizabeth were the parents of the family shown here (other than Isabell). I suspect a generation may have been missed, or another wife of Otes.
With Elizabeth generally a common name, and Otes much used in the Gilbert family there could easily have been two generations running of Otes and Elizabeth.
On the other hand, Otes could have been an older father, and had another, younger wife. The Hill pedigree (Vivian, added by him - not in the 1620 visitation) suggests that Elizabeth was unlikely to have been young enough to be the mother of the sons shown here - she would have had to have been significantly younger than her brothers. It is possible, though, perhaps there were other children who died young and are not shown in the Hill pedigree, or Robert Hill was widowed and remarried to a younger wife, who was the mother of Elizabeth.
Possibly most likely is that Otes Gilbert married another wife after the death of Elizabeth.
My theory of a missing generation may have extra weight from the existence of an Otho Gilbert of Compton dated 1439 (according to the Devon Will Project) - this Otes/Otho is missing from Vivian. Seeing this is a priority.
