  • Name George WELLS
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Between 1838 and 1844  Hampshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Born Fareham (1881 and 1901 censuses) or Farnham (1891 census)? Both say Hampshire, although Farnham is in Surrey it is close to the Hampshire border, so someone born just over the border near Farnham might describe themselves as born Farnham, Hampshire - and counties are not infrequently wrong; Caroline is shown as born Bognor, Hampshire in the 1881 census!

      Age given as 42 in 1881, 47 in 1891, 59 in 1901! Implies born 1838 - 1844.
Death registration index entry suggests born c 1838 (if I've found the right dth)

The best fit I've seen in the 1871 census, for a Geo or Wm, in Sussex or Hampshire,  was a George Wills for whom the alternate name of Geo Wells has been added, born Alton c. 1838!

In the first few years of birth registration a few births weren't recorded so Geo / Wm need not be one of these listed below:

      Possible births:
      FARNHAM
      WELLS, William q3 1841 Farnham RD 4 125; mother's maiden name: Budd
WELLS, William q3 1843 Farnham RD 4 135; no mother's maiden name recorded
WELLS, George q1 1844 Farnham RD 4 141; no mother's maiden name recorded
WELLS, George q4 1845 Farnham RD 4 149; no mother's maiden name recorded

      FAREHAM

      WELLSs, George q2 1842 Fareham RD 7 74; mother's maiden name Oakley

No William reg in Fareham RD 1838 - 1844
    Gender Male
    Military Service 1872
    Private in the Army
    • At the time of his marriage - resident Chichester - was this his home address or where he was based in the army?
    Occupation 1891
    General labourer
Mental health From 10 Nov 1908 to 11 Apr 1909  Hampshire County Lunatic Asylum, Fareham, Hampshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    In the asylum
    • Dates from the admission register
Died 11 Apr 1909  Hampshire County Lunatic Asylum, Fareham, Hampshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
Cause: General Paralysis of the Insane
    • Possibly 1909: only death of a William or George Wells I've found which is a good fit is a George died Fareham RD in 1909 (q2, 2b 352) - age given as 71

      (Fareham RD included Cosham)
    Notes
    • William from marriage PR entry; George from 1881 and 1891 censuses and the death I think is his.

Was he William or George or William George or George William? Or were there 2 men?

After "William" married in 1872 he could have died before 1881 and Caroline got together with a George Wells. It wasn't that unusual for a woman to marry her late husband's brother (though illegal at that time), but in this case I haven't found a marriage - but they could have simply lived together as man and wife.

I tend to think Wm and George were the same person, either he had 2 Christian names, maybe William George but known as George OR the marriage entry is simply wrong. Both William and Caroline made their marks when they married, so they may not have realised the name was wrong.

Details from PR entry (image on Ancestry, viewed 15 Nov 2022)
The witnesses were Ann Beaton (made her mark), presumably Caroline's sister Ann, and Edwin Mason, presumably the man Ann would marry some 4 years later.
