Notes - A Settlement certificate was given by West Stoke to Pulborough, dated 15 Sep 1744 for Henry and Grace. (Sussex Record Society database).I haven't yet seen the cert. but I think the reference means West Stoke were accepting they were the legal place of settlement of Henry and Grace. As it was not where Henry or his father were born, I guess that Henry had acquired it as a place of settment either by serving an apprenticeship there or by being employed for at least a year there. I doubt at his age / apparent status it was by serving as overseer or churchwarden or whatever.
Henry and Grace's son Henry was born after this but was baptised in Pulborough not West Stoke. I think this probably means that the Pulborough overseers had seen the family as potentially needing support and were getting ready to be able to remove them, but had not needed to do so by the time Henry was born. Alternatively, if Grace's parents or other family were living in Pulborough perhaps she went to them for the birth, and had young Henry baptised while there.
It looks as though the family had been removed to West Stoke by the time Thomas was born in 1746, and remained there for at least 5 years to the time of Joseph's baptism. Before Mary was born two years later they apparently moved to Funtingdon and were there up to May 1757.
A Henry was buried in West Stoke in December 1757 and a 48 year old Grace of West Stoke remarried in 1773. I suspect it was this Henry and Grace. If Henry had fallen ill in 1757, with the oldest child aged only 12 (old enough to work but not to earn much), the family would almost certainly have been removed back to West Stoke. The family would have continued to need support after Henry's death and so would have remained there (unless any of the children happened to placed as pauper apprentices in other parishes).
Settlement certificates etc. do not appear to have survived for either Funtingdon or West Stoke to check this suspected removal. - (Research):How do I know this is my Joseph's father - Joseph's age at death not shown in burial register, may be no 'of' place in marriage record and needn't be where born anyway. The 1744 settlement certificate links the Henry who married in Pulborough with West Stoke, and as this is where Joseph and some of his siblings were baptised I think this is good evidence Joseph's parents were Henry and Grace.
Is the baptism of the right Henry?
1. Most Sussex baptisms are on FamilySearch website and / or the SFHG database and this is the only one from them to fit.
2. The names Henry and Grace gave their children are very similar to those Henry and Mary gave their children.
3. The connection with Benjamin-the-smuggler was passed down one line descended from Joseph (with shame, so I don't think it would have been assumed without evidence).

Gives year as 1743. Entry on FamilySearch website. Prob OS date as most FamilySearch entries are, and another FS entry for the same marriage gives year as 1744.
Both entries give Grace's surname as Shelly despite that being her maiden name and her having been married to Philip Newman. Need to see PR to confirm details.
