  • Name Thomasine BASTARD
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1598
    • Estimated from approx dob of her brother John (Thomasine said in Vivian to be 5th dau, I don't know how the daughters were dispersed amongst the sons)
    Gender Female
Buried 15 Oct 1678  All Saints’ Church, Malborough, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • From PR entry (image on DFHS website, member's section, p.144 )
"Octob 15th Mrs Thomazin Harris vid - buried" - under heading 'Anno Dom: 1678 :'I think it is probably the burial of this Thomasine.
The widow indicates this was not the burial of Phillip's daughter, the 'Mrs' is consistent with this family's status, but the transcribed data only covers burials 1673 - 1703, so it is possible that a son of Phillip had also married a Thomasine, and this is her burial.
Siblings 3 brothers and 4 sisters
    Patriarch & Matriarch
John BASTARD,   d. Yes, date unknown  (3 x Great Grandfather)
Alice (or Agnes) BRENT,   d. Yes, date unknown  (2 x Great Grandmother)
    Notes
    • Vivian notes that either Thomasine or her sister Elizabeth was married to a Harris, as their father's will refers to "my daughter Harris". I suspect the husband was Philip Harris, as a Philip Harris signed a Bastard family settlement in 1634, and Vivian also shows that a Phillip Harris was one of the overseers of Joseph's will. The other (of Elizabeth and Thomasine) had probably predeceased their father as not mentioned in his will.
Although Harris is a common surname, and Thomasin was a popular Christian name, Phillip was not very common at the time and I think the Phillip Harris in question was probably the one who died in 1646, 'of Alston in the parrish of Marleborough in the County of Devon'. This is near Gerston, and from the will Phillip was clearly well off, consistent with what would be likely for a daughter of Joseph.
It's possible, though, that it is the right Phillip but he had married Elizabeth Bastard, Elizabeth had died and Phillip had remarried to a Thomasine.
Thomasine was young enough in 1646 that she might have been pregnant (Phillip made allowance for this in his will). Just about possible with my estimated date of birth for her of 1598, but it is only an estimate and she could have been 10 years younger.

Between 17 Dec 1644 and 28 Sep 1646  (Age ~ 61 years)
    Married Bef 1633
    • Phillip married a Bastard (Elizabeth, or as I think probably Thomasine) before Joseph Bastard (father of Elizabeth and Thomasine) wrote his will.
Checked baptisms in Malborough (by browsing DFHS images of the PRs) from 1631-1647; no other baptims of the children of Phillip found than the 3 shown, although some of the 1632 entries are illegible.
No marriage licence found in Vivian (to 1631) by searching for Harris or Harrys in a PDF copy but some entries aren't picked up or misread by the OCR.
      * Some of the children could be Phillip's by a previous marriage *
