    Notes
    • Mother of Joseph, daughter of Otes (whoh married Catherine Champernon) according to Vivian (Cornwall Visitations) citing Original Visitation of Cornwall 1620, Harl. MS. 1162, verified by the signature of Joseph Bastard.
Father shown as Geffrey in the unsigned Original Visitation of Devon 1620, Harl. MS. 1163, fo. 238, (Colby's transcription, p.19, agrees) and Thomasine is not shown in the 1564 visitation of Devon (Colby, p.112), where the other children of Otes and Catherine are shown and despite the fact she was living at the time. (Geffrey, otherwise Galfrid, is shown but his children / family are not in that visitation).  Also, in Otes' will he names his children but there is no mention of Thomazine. It seems to me there is sufficient evidence  to suggest that Thomazine was not the daughter of Otes.

One would expect that information signed by Joseph about his grandfather would be reliable and hence that Thomasine's father was probably Otes. Otys / Otes / Otho was a popular name in the Gilbert family and had been for some time, so it may be that Otes is correct but that it was not the one I show; Vivian shows Geffery as having a brother Otho, though not what became of him - perhaps he was Thomazine's father. On the other hand perhaps Joseph wasn't very interested; Geffery was the son of an Otes and perhaps it was his great grandfather's name that Joseph was remembering. Whilst Joseph should have known who his grandfather was, although the Devon visitation was not signed it would seem probable the information was from William, brother of Joseph, i.e. a grandson of the same couple, so he too should have known.

Geffrey, shown by the Devon visitation as the father of Thomasine (Bastard tree) and added to the Gilbert tree by Vivian (p. 405), left a will, shown by Vivian to have been proved in the Consistory Court in Exeter. Unfortunately no copy of this will (which was lost in bombing in WW2) is known of (i.e. none listed on Devon wills project, as of 17 May 2016).

Finally, the fact that Thomazine was married by 1547 suggests she was unlikely to have been the daughter of Otes, who was born about 1513.

Taking all the above together, I think it reasonable to suppose Geffery, not Otes, was the father of Thomazine.
