Walter Herbert BOOTES
Set As Default Person -
Name Walter Herbert BOOTES Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 12 Mar 1879 Kingsdown near Lynsted, Kent, England
- GRO ref: Bootes, Walter Herbert q2 1879 Milton RD 2a 800; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Knight
Actual place from the 1921 census.
1939 registration shows dob as 12 March 1881; I suspect that the date and month were correct but the year wrong. (FreeBMD shows no registration of the birth of a Walter Bootes in 1881, and the 1921 census includes his middle name of Herbert)
Baptised 13 Apr 1879 St. Catherine’s Church, Kingsdown near Lynsted, Kent, England
- From the PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 22 Mar 2023)
Gender Male Residence 1881 Kingsdown Court Cottage, Kingsdown near Lynsted, Kent, England
- With his parents, his father a gardener, and three siblings, aged 11 months to 8 (I think - it looks like the oldest, Edward's age has been corrected from 6 to 8). Edward alone was at school (noted as a scholar).
Education 1891 Scholar Residence 1891 Hernestall Cottage, Doddington, Kent, England
- With his parents, his father a gardener, and nine siblings, aged 1 - 16, the whole family recorded with the surname ROOT - presumably an error by the ennumerator. His oldest brother was working as a houseboy, Walter and five of his siblings, aged 6 - 13, were scholars, the youngest three, aged just 1 - 3, were not.
Residence 1901 Mill Cottage, Newnham, Kent, England
- Walter was with his mother-in-law (head of the household), his wife - still recorded as a Brenchley, although she and Walter had married the previous July, and a nephew-in-law, Reginald A BRENCHLEY, like Walter a gardener.
Occupation 1901 Groom and gardener (domestic) Occupation 1921 Wood carter - Working for E Gilbert, a wood merchant

- From report of funeral, where said to have lived in Bredgar for 30 years.
Buried 11 May 1962 St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England

- GRO ref: Bootes, Walter Herbert to Brenchley, Agnes Mabel q3 1900 Faversham RD 2a 1795
(only the one marriage of a Bootes to a Brenchley, anytime, anywhere, and names fit those with Iris and her husband in 1939 [on FreeBMD on 3 Nov 2015])
Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 22 Mar 2023)
The 1901 census shows that Agnes had a nephew Reginald who was a gardener. Did Walter, also a gardener (and a groom) work in the same garden as Reginald? Is this how Agnes and Walter met?
Despite having been married nearly 11 years by the time of the 1911 census, it shows they had had just 2 children, although they had children born every couple of years from 1910 - 1920. Checking the birth registration index suggests it is true; there are no other BOOTES children with an mother's maiden name of BRENCHLEY.
