  • Name Mark HELSTONE
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Gender Male
Miscellaneous 8 Jul 1596  Barham, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Two cows stolen
    • The Quarter Session records show that in 1596 one John Marshe, a carpenter of Barham, aided and abetted by yeoman William Cullen of Bethersden, stole 2 cows from Mark Helstone, gentleman, and Thomas Cullen of Barham, yeoman.
The cows were described as 'one colour brown with a gored back worth 50s. , the other 'color pyde with Red and white' worth 50s'.

I guess that Thomas may have been farming land held by Mark. In a record relating to the case, when John Marsh was examined regarding his act it was described as 'Examination of John Marsh regarding his driving of two kine from Thos. Cullinge of Breech in Barham to Bethersden on 8 July', with no mention of Mark.

I am assuming there was one event, though there are two entries catalogued (same date, 20 July 1596) refs: QM/SI/1596/8/1 and QM/SI/1596/9.
My description combines data from both catalogue entries; I have not seen the QA records.
    Died Between 1599 and 1620
    • Living when his brother-in-law William Lyster wrote his will in 1599, but his wife was buried as a widow in 1620
    Notes
    • (Research):Described as Marke Horolston / Hurlestone als Hilston / Hillstone  'brother in law' and 'of Barham' in the will of William Lyster - was Mark a sister's husband, or the brother (or husband of a sister) of William's wife?
Since William's first wife was a Barbor, and there is a marriage of a Mark Helstone to Christian Barbor then I think the latter, the husband of a sister of William's first wife.

    Family Christian BARBOR,   d. 1620
Married 26 Jul 1589  St. Mildred’s Church, Canterbury, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • From PR entry (image on FMP )
      "Mark Helstone & Chrystyan barbor
wer marryed the xxvi day of July."I am guessing that the brother in law that William Lyster mentioned was this one who married in 1589. If, though, his brother in law was somewhat older than William, it could be his son, marrying a cousin..
