John WOTTON
Set As Default Person -
Name John WOTTON Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1522 - Shown as aged 32 in his father's IPM
Shown as aged 'liiii [54] yeres or thereaboutes' in a deposition taken on 12 Feb 1578/9 (TNA ref: E 133/4/575) but in another deposition the same year was said to be 56 (TNA ref: E134-21and22Eliz-Mich37).
Gender Male Biography History of Parliament Civic duty 7 Feb 1552/53 Member of Parliament - John Wootton along with Christopher Savery were returned as MPs for 'Great Totnes'
(see TNA catalogue entry - I have not viewed the original document)
Chancery Court dispute 26 Jan 1563/64 - It appears that either this was resolved after a Bill was issued, or that only the Bill has survived.
John Wotton the plaintiff, his nephew William and William's mother were defendants. The case concerned goods left at the house by John's father and William's grandfather, another William Wotton and the execution of the latter's will.
(TNA ref: C 3/198/29)
Property 1579 Englebourne, Harberton, Devon, England
Mortgage of Engleborne - In 1579 (during the law Trinity term) a record was made of money lent by Nicholas Dottyn to John Wotton. This was for the mortgage of a tenement and lands called Englebore[sic], in the parish of Harbarton. Devon.
(TNA catalogue entry - I have yet to see the actual document)
Died Aft 1578 - The information about John found on the history of parliament website shows 1555 as the last reference found to him, but I am fairly confident the 1564 property transaction refers to this John and depositions in 1578 are clearly by and about him (TNA refs: E 133/4/575 and E134-21and22Eliz-Mich37).
Not the John Wotton for whom an IPM was held in 11 James I (about 1613; C 142/682/90) - that John, whose property held direct from the crown was in Ashburton, left a son and heir Philip, aged just 18.

Father William WOTTON, d. 9 Dec 1554 Mother Agnes HOLCOMB, d. Bef 1554 Married Bef 1522 - Agnes is named as his last wife in William's will; although I show her as the mother of his children she could of course be mother of all, some or none.
Surname of the wife of William and mother of John shown as Holcomb in 1620 visitation.
In combining Agnes with Holcomb I might be creating someone who never existed!

Family Agnes HACKWELL, d. Yes, date unknown Married Bef 1544 - John's wife's name and date ('by 1544') from John's page on the History of Parliament website.
The first 7 names I show here as their children are from the will of William, John's father; writing in May 1554 he names these 7 as John's children, including eldest son William and younger son William [sic - not youngest - what does this mean? youngest of all sons, or just younger of the 2 Williams?]. I am guessing younger did mean youngest in placing him last on the list. I do think he must have been born after his brother Walter, as Walter appears to have been ahead of him in inheriting Engleborne.
Apart from that, the order is as they are mentioned in the will (i.e. sons first, probably not birth order!).
The History of Parliament entry for John mentions 5 sons and 3 daughters, if accurate it would appear a son is missing from the will, I guess because he was born after it was written. That fits with the Arthur shown in the 1620 Devon visitation record.
Other documents mention others:
Anne - The visitation of Devon of 1564 shows an 'Anne, d. of John Wootton of Inglebury' married Andrew Holland of Weare [ no date given but a nephew of Andrew is shown as b. 14 Mar 1576 ]
In Colby's book of the 1620 visitation it was shown that:
'Andrew Holland of Weare co. Devon = Anne d. of John Wootton of Bugleborne'(!)
A daughter (name not given) married William Hakewill, possibly a cousin? Interesting grandsons. (see Devon Visitation 1620)
