KFHS transcript (CD 21) - mother's name given as Ann
Gender Male Occupation Millstrood Farm, Whitstable, Kent, England
Farmer - Probably!
In the burial record for Michael's grandson Michael Webb is recorded that the latter drowned in his "Grandfather Michl. Goatham's pond at Millstrood".
From this I imagine that Michael Goatham must have been a farmer. Or might he have been a miller? (we refer to "mill ponds")
If I am right and he was a farmer I imagine the family would have lived at Millstrood Farmhouse, which still survives and is a listed building.
It can be seen in a photo here
Died Nov 1754 Whitstable, Kent, England
- (assumed from burial)
Buried 1 Dec 1754 All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England
- The PRs show thes Michael buried as "householder". This is the only Michael I now know of whose burial this could be.
A widow named Elizabeth Goatham remarried in 1756 - this fits too with the widow of this Michael.

Notes - (name also recorded as Mickel Or Michal)
Is this George's father?
I have Michael and his wife as the parents of my ancestor George but I am not certain about this. See research notes on George's page for more about this.
Churchwarden and Feoffee
This Michael seems the only one the right age to have been the Churchwarden in Whitstable in 1730 when the bells were cast; his name is recorded on the tenor.
Also the only one who could have been a feoffee named on some documents in the Canterbury Cathedral archives centre, dating from 1731 - 1751. (I hope to see these in time)
The feoffees managed charities for the benefit of the poor of Whitstable; some more information about this can be found on the British History Online website.
Coleman's Catalogue: deeds
This includes an entry for deeds concerning Michael Goatham in Whitstable Parish in 1725 (vol. 113, item 458, p.20)
James Coleman was an heraldic and genealogical bookseller and publisher in London in the second half of the 19th century. As a second hand dealer he sold marriage settlements, wills, rent rolls, peerage claims, private and local Acts of Parliament, appeal cases, pedigrees, deeds, autograph letters, maps and so on as well as new and second hand books on heraldry, topography and biography.
His catalogues give brief details of the items for sale, and the Society of Genealogists has in its library bound copies of these catalogues. I will look up the entry for Michael and see if there is any additional info., although the information given about a document is often sparse.
