  	In the 'Parish Chest' records for Kingsteignton is a complaint of one John Soper with reference to Thomas Light's refusal to pay £2 9/6d. maintenance for Elizabeth Baileys son. (A2A catalogue entry, DRO ref.  2565 A/PO 25) 1831

  	The occupation written by the head of the household, Elizabeth Stevens, has been struck through and I can't make it out. However, the household looks like that which you might expect of a farming family, and in the tithe apportionments for Kingsteignton there is an entry for Elizabeth Stevens showing that she was the occupier of a holding with almost 147 acres. One of those with her in 1841 was John, probably a son, and the 1851 census seems to confirm this. In that year Elizabeth was living with a John Stevens and his family, shown as 'Mother'. John was a farmer of 170 acres employing 2 labourers. In other words, it is highly probable that Henry was an ag lab rather than a domestic servant.

  	Thomas seems to have been reluctant to marry Elizabeth. He was believed to be the father of her son Henry, yet he didn't marry her before or soon after the birth. In September 1830 he obtained a marriage licence, but in 1831 there was a complaint about his refusal to pay for Henry's mainteance, and it was not until October that year that they married. Maybe he and Elizabeth had been courting but he did not believe Henry wast his son, hence the reluctance.
