    • At the time of his marriage.
    Died Bef 1787
    • Before his wife remarried (assuming I am correct about it being his widow who married Joseph Bailey), and assuming it was not a bigamous marriage! I have not found a burial for his, but he could well have been a mariner and died at sea or overseas.
    Buried
    • I have not found a burial, given he was 'of West Teignmouth' when he married he could well have been a mariner and have died at sea or in a distant port, in Britain or further afield.

The Banns and marriage register entries show that Richard was of West Teignmouth, Elizabeth of Kingsteignton.

Why I believe Elizabeth's first husband was Richard Gerret

Assuming that she was no older than 50 when her last child was born, she can have been born no earlier than 1756, and so married for the first time between 1768 (but that young would have been exceptionally rare) and 1787.
Checking for marriages of an Elizabeth to a Gerret in Devon in 1777+/- 10 using FMP index (as at 2 Sep 2014) throws up 2 possibles:
      1. John Garrett marr Elizabeth Marten on 10 Nov 1783 in Abbotskerswell
No Abbotskerswell PR images with index on FMP, looking on FamilySearch for baptisms of children of a John and Elizabeth in Abbotskerswell 1775 - 1803 there were just 2, in 1784 (so they probably were offspring of the couple who married in 1783) and in 1786. The fact that there were none after this does suggest that one of the parents may have died, although of course the couple could have moved or simply had no more children.
If Elizabeth was baptised in Abbotskerswell she must have been baptised in 1750, but the index doesn't show where Elizabeth was living (though that needn't have been where she was born it quite likely was). A John Gerrett was buried in Abbotskerswell in 1824, aged 65, so born in about 1758 or 9, likely to be the one who married in 1783. If this burial is the John who married in 1783, then clearly his widow can't have remarried in 1787.
      2. The other possibility is the marriage in Kingsteignton of Richard Gerrett (Jerret) of West Teignmouth to Elizabeth Evans on 18 Feb 1783. This couple appear to have had no children baptised in either Kingsteignton or West Teignmouth in the period 1783-1803. There is also no sign of a burial of Richard in either parish (or any other in Devon that is currently online, 1783-1803), or a likely Richard or Elizabeth Gerrett in Kingsteignton or West Teignmouth after that date. That could indicate they had moved away. However, Richard might have died but had no burial; many mariners lived in West Teignmouth and if Richard was one he might have drowned at sea.
Elizabeth Evans was probably the one baptised Nov 1760 in Kingsteignton, suggesting she was a couple of years younger than the age given for Joseph's wife when buried suggests, but the age recorded at burial could easily be out by a couple of years, especially likely given the date of baptism of the youngest child of Joseph and Elizabeth, so not only do I not think this is sufficient to exclude her, but I think she is the most likely candidate.
Additionally, the Elizabeth who married Joseph Bailey inherited a cot house in Kingsteignton that had been her father's, so it is likely she was from Kingsteignton. That said, they are said to have come into possession of it about three years after their marriage, and yet there is no obvious death that would have led to this.

(Almost all marriages in the area will be on FMP, either as index entries from DFHS, or from PR images, so it is most likely the marriage is one of the above)

When Elizabeth Evans married Richard Gerrett she made her mark, as did widow Elizabeth Gerrett when she married Joseph Bailey, and comparing the marks I think they are the same. Neither was a common X or + but an E, not just an E but an E with a tail, i.e. rather like an 'F' but with 3 horizontal bars instead of two. Together with the above I think we can be fairly confident that the Elizabeth who married Joseph Bailey had the maiden name Evans.
