Notes - Francis may be father or brother of the Nathaniel who married in Modbury in 1625 then had his children baptised in Stokenham, or possibly a more distant relative.
Whatever the relationship, Francis' will suggests that Nathaniel was probably his closest relation, as Francis made Nathaniel his residual (and probably main) beneficiary, as well as executor. - (Research):How (if at all) was Francis related to 'the' Champernowne family of Modbury and Dartington?
I think the rareness of the surname and the fact Nathaniel was married at Modbury suggests there was a link.
Added to this was the use of the name Francis - or Frances, both spellings were used for both sexes in the past. One might have expected Francis to become a popular name in honour of Sir Francis Drake in the late C16th, but in Stokenham with 4374 baptisms between 1578 and 1700 (transcribed entries on FMP) there appear to have been only 3 boys baptised Francis: Frances Pate in 1627, Francis Blackler in 1628 (son of another Francis) and Frances Sumaster in 1654.
This equates to about 1 in 700 men, assuming there were approximately equal numbers of boys and girls baptised (I have not looked through all these entries myself but am relying on FMP to have recognised the name Franc(i/e)s).
Even if a few Francis were mistranscribed as something else it was clearly a rare Christian name. But it was one also used by the Modbury / Dartington family at around this time. It seems to me to have been used more by gentry family than the general population, and so its use for this clearly not very wealthy Francis may be indicative of his fairly recent descent from gentry.

"Frances Chambren to Joane Morgridg was Marryed"
Francis' will shows that he left a widow Joane, and there is only a burial of one Francis in Stokenham, so it seems fairly safe to assume that it was the remarriage of the Francis who had been widowed in 1621 and who died in 1632.
It is quite likely that Joane was a widow, and so not born Joane Morgridg.
