Robert PEPPERELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Robert PEPPERELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 16 Feb 1794 All Saints’ Church, West Alvington, Devon, England
- From SouthHams website
Gender Male Occupation From 1818 to 1851 Malborough, Devon, England
Farmer - Recorded as yeoman or farmer when all of his children were baptised, also in the 1841 and 1851 censuses.
The 1851 census showed he was farming 90 acres and employing 5 labourers.
I guess this included the 2 ag labs then living in the house with the family: 16 year old John Dovnom and Samuel Friend, aged 14 (both born Malborough). Did it also include the two sons (James and Robert) who were living at home and described as ag labs?
Residence From 1841 to 1851 Beadon, Malborough, Devon, England
- Beadon in the 1841 census, Beyden in 1851; it was shown as in Malborough Parish but in the Ecclesiastical District of Salcombe.
With his wife and 9 children at the time of the 1841 census.
Three others were also in the house on census night:
15 year old Thomas Thorning, a male servant;
45 year old Thomas Freeman, a Land Drainer
20 year old John Nunn, a mason
In 1851 only 6 children were present: John had died, Elizabeth had married, I haven't come across Mary. Two teenage ag labs were also present.
The 3 daughters were all shown as house servants - but this was crossed out. Was this because they were assisting their mother in their home? With a household of 10 there was probably enough work.
Died Yes, date unknown

Father Robert PEPPERELL, bap. 25 Nov 1759, St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England
, d. 8 Jan 1826, Woolston, West Alvington, Devon, England
(Age ~ 66 years) Mother Susanna EVANS, b. Abt 1760, bur. 10 Feb 1841, All Saints’ Church, Malborough, Devon, England
(Age ~ 81 years) Married 8 May 1787 All Saints’ Church, West Alvington, Devon, England
- n.b. I can't be certain that the Robert who married Susanna was the one shown here.
Robert was a popular name amongst the Pepperells and it is possible that there was another born about 1759.
However, since the Stokenham-baptised son of Robert and Mary appears to have left that Parish and I haven't found him in the neighbouring parishes of Slapton, Sherford etc. it seems quite likely.
