Catherine GOATHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Catherine GOATHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Whitstable, Kent, England
Baptised 13 May 1737 All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England
- Baptism of Catherine not found, but the KFHS transcripts show an illegible entry for a child of George and Jane - I thought it was probably for Catherine, especially given that her husband was baptised in 1736, but then noticed it says son! I will try to check the actual image.
If it is definitely for a son then Catherine is probably a daughter of Michael or George, but I don't know which.
Gender Female Died Nov 1793 (probably), Whitstable, Kent, England
Buried 13 Nov 1793 All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 13 Mar 2014) - under heading "Burials. 1793." - "Novr. Catherine Cambourn of Seasalter."
IGI shows a Catherine Goatham bur 13 Nov 1793 in Whitstable, but the KFHS transcripts of the PRs show the name is "Catherine Cambourne" so it looks like someone has worked out it is likely to Catherine nee Goatham and recorded them with their maiden name

Father George GOATHAM, bap. 31 May 1696, St. Nicholas’ Church, Sturry, Kent, England
, bur. 29 Jan 1758, All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England
(Age ~ 61 years) Mother Jane STANES, b. Est 1698, bur. 3 Nov 1752, All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England
(Age ~ 54 years) Married 6 Oct 1720 St. John the Baptist Church, Swalecliffe, Kent, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 18 Feb 2017)
"George Goatham of the Parish of Whistaple & Jane Stanes of the Parish of Swalclff were both marryed after thrice publication of the Banns. 1720 8:br 6:th"George was "of Whitstable" when they married.
There are two baptisms in Whitstable PRs for children of George and Mary Goatham: a daughter Elizabeth in 1730/31 amd son George in 1741.
The only George who it seemed could be the father was the one baptised in Herne in 1704, son of Thomas and Margaret.
However, there is no evidence of a marriage, nor of a burial for the wife Mary, and the ten year gap between the children is unusual.
Whilst it is clear that Whitstable PRs were not well kept at this time, it seems to be mostly burials that are missing, but George (one of them - probably the husband / father) was buried in Herne, not Whitstable. Wife Mary could have remarried - but that cannot be found either.
Rather than a whole host of missing records etc. it could make more sense if there was an error in the baptism register, if the mother's name of 'Mary' should read 'Jane'. The baptism of daughter Elizabeth would fit neatly into what is otherwise a gap of over 5 years between the known children of George and Jane, whilst that of George fits neatly onto the end. However, in both cases this means that George and Jane would have used the same name 3 times.

Family Robert CAMBURN, bap. 21 Nov 1736, St. Cosmus and St. Damian’s Church, Blean, Kent, England
, bur. 19 Feb 1784, All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England
(Age ~ 47 years) Married 17 Jul 1757 All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 15 Feb 2017)Marrying in 1757, it seems fairly safe to assume they would have had children before the first shown here, baptised (and probably born) in 1766.
They could have been baptised in another parish, but the lack is probably due to a gap in the PRs.
One parish register has baptisms to 1758; the next only starts at 1763. It will be necessary to view the ATs or BTs to look for others.
