  • Name John NICHOALS
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1658
    • Estimate based on date of marriage.

      South Pool registers only survive from 1664 / 5, so if John was baptised in South Pool it would be unlikely to be in the PRs. However, BTs survive from 1606 so it would be worth looking there.

    Notes
    • Nicholls family - my ancestors and their close relations

      Generation 1
      John and Elizabeth, who married in South Pool in 1686 and were later to be buried there, had 4 children baptised there, 3 daughters and a son John.
      John and Elizabeth themselves may have been baptized there but the PRs don't go back far enough to know, and I haven't yet had a chance to check the BTs.

      Generation 2
      Their son John married  Mary Garland in Stokenham where they too had 4 children, but the reverse of his parents, 3 sons and a daughter. All four married, and two had children baptised in Stokenham.
      What happened to John and Mary? They may have been buried in Stokenham, or they may be the John and Mary who were buried in Slapton; Nicholls does not seem to have been an established name there and with their grandson John subsequently moving there it seems possible they were there first.

      Generation 3
      Eldest son John married a Sarah Edwards but their seem to have been no offspring from the marriage. However, in the next generation my ancestor John (b c 1760) used the name Sarah Edwards for 2 daughters, and Henry Edwards for a son (prior to marriage Sarah had had a son Henry). So am I wrong to think John (b c 1760) was the son of Richard - was he actually the son of John? Or was there just a close relationship between John and his brother Richard who certainly did have a son John baptised c 1760, who therefore fits well as my ancestor? For the moment I am taking Richard and his wife Catherine as my ancestors.
      Richard and Catherine had 6 children in total including 4 sons, and Richard's other brother Robert had 2 with 1 son.
      But what became of them? None seem to have remained in Stokenham.

      After the baptism of the last of the children of Richard and Robert in 1765 there were no more Nicholls baptisms in Stokenham until 1806. Those from then were the offspring of a Joshua who married one Agnes Pepperel PEDRICK in Stokenham in 1805. Joshua was the son of James and Mary, baptised in South Pool in 1778, i.e. where my Nicholls ancestors were from. So was there a link? Possibly, probably but it could be pretty distant. His father James was not the James Paty, brother of my ancestor but rather a James who was baptised in Charleton in 1732, son of Roger and Wilmot. Roger's orgins are unknown. Probably born in the early 1700s I would expect to find his baptism. Maybe it has been mistranscribed or was in a parish not online for this date (Sherford and East Allington are both nearby, Kingsbridge and Malborough not far).

      A number of Nicholls turn up in West Alvington who seem to match Richard and Catherine and some of their family, and who don't match Nicolls baptised in West Alvington. It seems too much to be coincidence: burials for a Richard and a Catherine, a burial of a child James Nicholls when their son James was aged 6, and a marriage and eventually a burial of a younger Richard, who at his burial in 1825 was shown as aged 70, suggesting a birth in 1754 or 5; their son Richard was baptised in 1754. Hence I believe this is the family of my ancestors Richard and Catherine.
      A Robert Nicholls b c 1763 was buried in Exeter in 1836.

      Generation 4
      Unlike his parents, my ancestor John married in Slapton, and lived in Dartmouth and then in Slapton.
      Nearly all the Nicholls events in Slapton PRs can be linked to John and his family.

      Exceptions are the
      baptisms of a John 1725 and Agnes 1738, children of John and Elizabeth;
      John Nichols base son of Susann Rider and John Nichols (sworn father) on 9 Jun 1782;
      burial of an Elizabeth in 1756, a John in 1760 or 1770 and if John's grandparents were not buried there, the other John and a Mary in 1762.

      --------------------------------------------------------------
      Alternative tree (which is growing on me):

      - John b c 1760 was the son of John Nichoals and Sarah nee Edwards
      - The John who married Sarah Edwards was the John baptised in Slapton in 1725; he had first married Mary Lavers (Slapton, 1750)
      - The parents of the John bap 1725 were the John who married Elizabeth Rogers in Moreleigh in 1724. Unfortunately whilst most entries on the page include a 'both' or 'of this parish' where necessary, this entry simply has a 'of the Parish of Slapton' after Elizabeth's name, leaving it unclear whether this applied to both of them or just Elizabeth (in which case John was probably of Moreleigh). However, if John was of Moreleigh at the time of marriage it would seem he can only have taken a job there, and not been a life-long resident, since although Moreleigh PRs are indexed on FMP from 1695 there are no Nicholls events before this marriage, nor after until a marriage in 1872.

    • There were quite a few Huits married in South Pool in the 1680s and 1690s, suggesting the family was established in the parish. However, the PRs only go back to 1664/5 so finding anything earlier will be difficult. The BTs may help.

      The same is not true of the Nicholls family. The only entries from the start of the PRs to 1733 are for John and his immediate family (i.e. wife and children). In 1734 a Roger can be found having children.

      It looks, therefore, like John might well have moved to South Pool from elsewhere, but I think his name is too common for any realistic possibility of identifying him, should his baptism be in any PRs that do survive.
