  Notes	Birth mother was her adoptive mother's sister - she only learnt this when middle-aged and wanted to apply for a passport. (I was told this by her adoptive father's sister Ethel shortly after Irene learnt this). With her natural mother dying 6 days after her birth, presumably her father felt unable to cope with a new-born baby, especially as he already had a 4 year old. Most records do not reflect that she was adopted (fostered) - the 1930 census, for example, shows her surname as Goatham, relationship to head of household as daughter and the birthplaces of her parents as England and Scotland, which reflects those of her adoptive parents, not her birth parents. However, in 1940, her name is recorded as Irene G Scott, relationship to head of household as foster-daughter and both of her parents shown born Scotland - as both of her biological parents were.
