    • From TNA discovery catalogue, from register of seamen's services
GRO ref: GLOYN, James q1 1863 Plympton RD 5b 238

It's not unusual to find discrepancies between the year of birth and that in seaman's records, but the quarter the birth was registered and the dob suggest a different month as well.
Yet because James was with his parents at the time of the census in 1881 it does seem it was this James who was in the navy. (I haven't seen the naval record, maybe there is an error in the dob in the index)
    Gender Male
    Education 1871
    Scholar
    Military Service 1881
    Royal Navy
    • At the time of the 1881 census James was in the Royal Navy, a sailor on H. M. S. Impregnable. HMS Impregnable became a training ship in 1862, serving as such until 1888. James was probably at home on census night because he could live at home while training (others lived in Tamerton Foliot and worked at Devonport dockyard).
