      "No 134
Samuel Grigsby of this Parish Batchelor
      and Elizabeth Townsden of the
      same Parish Spinster were
Married in this Church by Banns
this Sixteenth Day of July in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred
and Ninety Eight by me Jas: Downs Vicar
This Marriage was solemnized between Us Samuel + Grigsby his mark, Elizabeth X Townsden her mark
In the Presence of William + Whitehead his Mark, Mary + Whitehead her mark"
Samuel's sister Mary Grigsby was a Whitehead by marriage - witnesses were probably her and her son or her daughter and her son. Witnesses were usually young people, most often siblings or else cousins; Samuel being the youngest child of his parents and Mary the oldest he was actually closer in age to his nephew and niece William and Mary Grigsby than to his sister Mary.

Banns were read first first in Chatham, declaring both as of Chatham parish, for three weeks from 6th May, then in Bredgar for the following 3 weeks (with both now said to be of Bredgar parish). At this time many from Bredgar seem to have married elsewhere, particularly in Chatham, making out they were of Chatham parish. Perhaps it came to light in Samuel and Elizabeth's case that they were actually of Bredgar, and so they had to change their plans.
It would have cost them, to have had an additional reading of the banns in Chatham.
