    Housekeeper
    • PROBABLY NOT THIS CATHERINE COAST

A 'Catharine Coast', aged 44 and born Lenham, was housekeeper to 38 year old widower Phillipps Bigglestone and his family - 3 children aged 5 to 8.A young (13 year old) general servant was also employed.
Phillips was the manager of an ironfoundry.

But was it this Catherine? A David and Hetty Coast also had a daughter Catherine, born Lenham and of similar age to this Catherine. She was also single at the time of the 1871 census, when she was employed as a cook.
A fairly quick look for a marriage or death 1871-1881, or another Kate / Catherine in the 1881 census has failed to find what became of the other.

Such housekeeping arrangements to a widow often led to marriage, but not in this case. Phillips was still a widower and with a different housekeeper in 1891. Catherine appears to have moved back to Lenham before her death, possibly due to the illness that led to it - althought the Lenham burial may have been of the other Catherine Coast, not the one who was housekeeper.
Died Dec Q 1884  Hollingbourne Reg Dist, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

n.b. can't be certain the death was this Catherine, could be her 1st cousin, the daughter of David and Hetty - PROBABLY NOT THIS CATHERINE COAST

A Kate Coast married in 1883, to a Bernard Lampard, who I thought might be one of these 2 Catherine, but finding her int he 1891 census shows she was aged only 32 i.e. born about 1858

    • From mid-Kent marr index - 1825 03 December, HUNT Maria to William Coast, Maidstone (All Saints)

William's half sister Ann also married a Hunt - John Hunt. Obviously Hunt is a common surname but I thought there might be a link. The John she married was born about 1822 in Rotherhithe; but how had they met? The married in 1852 and at the time of the 1851 census Ann was visiting her half-sister Martha Rattenbury (nee Coast) and her family, in Rotherhithe. I think Ann probably met John while staying with Martha, and there is probably no link between John Hunt and my Hunt ancestors, but haven't ruled out the possibility that John was from a family who had moved from Lenham to Rotherhithe.
John and Ann Hunt did not use any of the distinctive names used in the family that would suggest a link to the Lenham family (Basil, Springfield, Sibella)
