Sarah ELLIOT

-
Name Sarah ELLIOT Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 4 May 1763 All Saints’ Church, South Milton, Devon, England [1]
Gender Female Buried 28 Aug 1818 All Saints’ Church, South Milton, Devon, England [2]
- I suspect it was this Sarah who was buried here as. as well as the age fitting, due to her being returned her for burial. If she had been a wife or widow Sarah I would have expected her most likely to be buried with her husband or where she died.
However, there is an 1819 inventory for a Sarah Elliot of Exeter listed in the Devon wills index, so the burial might be that Sarah not this one.
An index to South Milton monumental inscriptions (including gravestones) does not help much. It shows an entry for a Sarah Elliot died 1818 on a stone with no other, but also a Sarah 1818 on a stone with Nathaniel 1819. The DFHS burial index shows Nathaniel was aged 19 - too young to be Sarah's husband, but the only bapt of a Nathaniel in South Milton on the South Hams website (covering 1736-1812) was baptised 1740, so has 79 been mis-read as 19?

- The DFHS Woodleigh Deanery CD shows there was also a marriage of a DENNIS, John to SUMPTER, Mary in E Allington on 3 Aug 1761, but as the Charleton marriage shows Mary as of Charleton I think it was much more likely to be this one. Also the Mary who married John Elliot gave a daughter the relatively unusual name Cecilia, like Mary's mother.

The DFHS marriage include some banns only, and since this marriage was clearly at Charleton I'm sure this must be one such entry. - [S210] Charleton - St. Mary’s Church - m/f images, St. Mary’s Church (Charleton, Devon), Marriage of John ELLIOT to Mary SUMPTER 1761; DE/REG/57867/1-8 m/f 6 (Reliability: 3).
