    Oath of Allegiance 1723
    • A John Hext of Stokenham signed the oath of allegiance in 1723; I believe it was this John, his son being too young, his father dead and no other Hext families seem to have been living in Stokenham at this time.
Church Office to 1770  St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Parish Clerk
    • Shown as such when he was buried.
The Parish Clerk was chosen and appointed by the priest (at least, it was his right - some may have asked the annual parish meeting to elect a new clerk). It was an appointment for life. Quite often a new clerk chosen was a son of the previous clerk. In this case John's great grandfather Thomas is known to have been Parish Clerk in the 1630s. Had it passed down through the generations inbetween - to be researched?
(Samuel Kellond seemed to take over as Parish Clerk after his death, not one of his sons)
