Charles FIELD
Set As Default Person -
Name Charles FIELD Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Between 1784 and 1788 (possibly), Sherington, Buckinghamshire, England
- Date of birth uncertain: abt 1788 (1861 cen); abt 1786 (1871 cen), 90 on dth cert=1784, (65 in 1851=1785/6).
His place of birth is also uncertain although it seems clear it was in Buckinghamshire. The 1871 census shows Newport, Bucks, the 1851 shows Oldney, and the 1861 Hemmington(?), Bucks. I suspect that Oldney should be Olney, and that Newport refers to Newport Pagnell; Newport and Olney may have been quoted as the towns near to a village. I think Hemmington could refer to Sherington or Warrington. I think it unlikely that a census ennumerator in Surrey would have heard of this village in north Buckinghamshire, and I can imagine that "Sherrington" could look to the ennumerator like Hemmington, and have been mis-recorded. There is no Hemmington (or similar, that I have discovered) in Bucks., and whilst there is in other conties this would not explain the birthplace being given as Oldney and Newport in other years, and consistently as in Buckinghamshire. Moreover, Sherington is between Olney and Newport, and thus could explain how both of them come to be given as birthplace in the censuses. Lastly, it is clear that there were Field families in Sherington at this time.
Warrington is a hamlet within the parish of Olney. Although to the noth of Olney, Newport Pagnell could still have been quoted as the nearest town of any size.
Gender Male Residence From 1841 to 1851 Wallington, Surrey, England
- Charles probably spent a significant part of his life in the Wallington / Carshalton area. He was living there by the time his daughter Sarah was born in 1814, and all of his children (born from then to 1824) have birthplaces recorded as Carshalton or Wallington. In Wallington at the time of the 1841 and 1851 censuses, he had moved about 15 miles to Chiswick by 1861, but was back in Carshalton by the time of the 1871 census.
The censuses do not include a precise address - Wallington was only a hamlet at this time - but in 1851 the house, like a number of others, was described as "nr the Elms". The Elms was at Wallington Corner; it was demolished about 1929 and replaced by the Elm Grove Estate.
Occupation From 1841 to 1851 Wallington, Surrey, England
Gardener - Described as gardener on census returns (1841, 1851, 1871) and on his dau. Martha's marr cert in 1843.
In 1851 at least Charles was living "nr the Elms" - it may have been that Charles was working in the gardens of this house. But The Elms was at Wallington Corner, and this was near to the large Beddington Park, so Charles may have been employed here. It was not a good time for the Carew family who then owned the Park, however, and some of it had been converted to fields.
Although Alfred Smee acquired The Grange in about 1850, where the gardens were to be important to him, he does not appear to have bought the land for them until the 1860s (ref: Friends of Beddington Park website) . He wrote a book "My Garden", published in 1872, to celebrate his love for The Grange gardens.
Residence 1861 High Road, Chiswick, Surrey, England
Occupation 1861 Chiswick, London, England
Labourer? - Charles' occupation was left blank when the census was first filled in, and the word "laborer" was added later (when "gardener" was written by or over "nurseryman").
This begs the question "is it accurate?", given that all other entries, after as well as before, given Charles' occupation as gardener. If it was accurate, it would seem probable that Charles' was doing labouring work in a garden.
In 1861 Charles, his wife and son William were boarding in the house of James Walden, a nurseryman, in High Road, Chiswick. (Charles' wife Jane was housekeeper, William was another nurseryman). Just 2 entries from this was the household of another nurseryman, Robert Glendinning, with the address given as "Chiswick Nursery". It seems reasonable to suppose that this is where Charles and William were working, although the RHS Gardens were at that time in Chiswick, and only a 10 minute walk away, so it is possible they were employed by the RHS.
The Chiswick Nursery was no ordinary nursery, but one established in 1740 which had been pioneering in a number of areas, particularly in the growth of pineapples, heathers and the Williams Pear. Robert Glendinning took over the nursery in 1843. He had wide-ranging horticultural interests; as well as continuing the nursery's specialisation in heathers and fruit trees he also had a high reputation for conifers.

Occupation 1871 Carshalton, Surrey, England

Died 24 Mar 1874 Sutton Place, Carshalton, Surrey, England
