Nicholas SHELLEY
Set As Default Person -
Name Nicholas SHELLEY Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Gender Male Residence 1713 Warminghurst, Sussex, England
- Described as of Warminghurst when he married in 1713, and again in 1738
Residence From 1719 to 1723 Thakeham, Sussex, England
[1] - Probably living in Thakeham when his daughters were baptised there, but again prior to his death judging from the will of William Harwood (written 1758): "Nicholas Shelley late of Thakeham Sussex Gentleman deceased"
Occupation 1738 [1, 2, 3] Keeper - Described as Gentleman when he married in 1713, and as Gentleman deceased in 1758, but in between (when his daughter Mary married) he was described as a keeper (gamekeeper?)
(This is assuming it was Nicholas Mary's father referred to in the marriage licence, and not another Nicholas e.g. an undiscovered brother of Mary)
Will 15 May 1755 Written Died Between 17 May 1755 and 7 Jul 1756 [1] - Between writing his will and it being proved
Probate 7 Jul 1756 Notes - (Research):Where was Nicholas from?
A Nicholas was baptised in Ringmer in 1682, son of Nicholas and Grace. The date is about right for a Nicholas who seems to have first married in 1713, and a mother's name of Grace would fit well with a Nicholas who after naming a daughter after his wife named one Grace.
BUT Ringmer is about 30 miles from Thakeham or Warminghurst, so Nicholas could be a from a family leaving nearer.
Did Nicholas have good reason to call himself 'gent'?
Or did he just happen to live in Warminghurst / Thakeham, see the monuments to gentry Shelleys there, and decide he must be part of the family?
The family of Shelleys which included Sir Wm Shelley had an Edward granted property in Warminghurst in 1540, and there were Shelleys in there and Thakeham till late 1600s. Moved around quiet a bit, much more than most poorer folk. Was Nicholas from a poorer line descended from a younger son? Some generations had plenty of children so that certainly seems a real possibility.
