    Chancery Court dispute 1844 
    George wanted Ann's inheritance 
    • Ann was the plaintiff, George her estranged husband the defendant in the dispute.
      The documents are long, and due to their width not easy to read. I have started transcribing them but it will take some time and at the moment I haven't gathered the full story.
      What is significant is that it is after George and Ann separated, not long after which Ann's parents died and she inherited a number of properties etc.
      This was well before before the Married Women's Property Act (1882) and I think George was trying to get his hands on Ann's inheritance.

    • Ann was shown as Fund Holder and House Holder. With her was a 77 year old female servant Elu(?) Boorman (born Sheerness)

    Inquisition regarding her mental health 
    • In an inqusition held by Samuel Warren Esq., one of the Masters of Lunacy Ann was found to be a person of unsound mind

      The admissions register at Ticehurst, however, shows her as having been "Found Lunatic by Committee of Person. Commission, Augt. 7. 66". She was sent not by her husband but by Mrs. S. Hooker of Sheerness (this also being given as Ann's abode).

    Lunatic asylum 
    • The Hospital was her 'Home' at the time of her death.
      I wondered why she had moved from Sheppey to Ticehurst, especially given that she had mental health problems - wondered if there was an asylum there, and sure enough there was.

      A Chancery Case of 1871 shows that she had been moved to a private asylum on being found of unsound mind in 1866.
      The admissions register for Ticehurst show that she was admitted as a private patient on 12 Feb 1867, and remained there until her death.

    A further case concerning Ann’s property 
    • As in the 1844 case, Ann was the plaintiff, George (her husband) the defendant in the dispute. However, whilst in 1844 Ann was represented by John Gorham, this time members of the Gorham family were defendants along with George.
      The documents are long, and although now in the form of small booklets, some handwritten, some printed and thus much easier to read, I have yet to read all through them and work out just what was going on.

      There are lots of references to earlier disputes and agreements.

    • In a Chancery Court Case (C 16/618/898) it is said that
      "The Defendant George Beacon and the Plaintiff were married on the 16th day of May 1826 as stated in the bill filed in this cause but they did not live happily together and finally separated in the month of September 1834. [*] They never lived together again"
      (where is have placed an * there is a struck through sentance:
      "The immediate cause of their separation was as I believe certain personal ill-usage inflicted by the Defendant George Beacon on the Plaintiff in respect of which he was formally bound over to keep the peace towards her")
