Scholar Military Service From 15 Dec 1858 to 6 Jun 1859 East Kent Militia - Attestation papers for the marines show that he joined from the East Kent Militia, and included is a certificate from the commanding officer showing when Edward enrolled.
Military Service From 6 Jun 1859 to 26 Jan 1863 Royal Marines - Attested to serve in the Royal Marines for twelve years at Aldershot aged 19 in 1859. Edward received £5 through joining, 10/6 on attesting, and the other £4-9-6 on final approval.
The attestation sheet has one side for the record of service to be recorded, but this is blank in Edward's case. He was apparently stationed at the Cape of Good Hope when with his brother they put 58 West Street up for sale in May 1862.
Edward was discharged with disgrace on 26 Jan 1863.
