Presumably he would have been expected to use his carpentry skills in the Marines, as an Exeter builder, one Thomas Wordon, certified on 31 Oct 1870 "that I have carefully examined William Trant and find him an efficient Carpenter". (Yes, the document does say William Trant, but is to be found amongst the bundle of papers for James at the National Archives, so I think this was a mistake by Wordon.
