KFHS CD12 shows that:
in 1646 James and Ann had a son John baptised
in 1649 widow Agnes had a son Tho baptised.
Why do I think Agnes = Ann?
Agnes husband presumably died in the 9 months before Tho was baptised. (It's not unknown for widows to become pregnant after being widowed but I think it would have been rare c. 1649)
A James Bacon was bur Mar 1648/9: given Tho baptism in July this was probably during Agnes' pregnancy.
It would have been a co-incidence if there were 2 couples in Cranbrook at that time, with both husbands dying during the Agnes' pregnancy, but only one burial in the parish.
And Thomas named his first son James; the first son was often named after the child's paternal grandfather.
I haven't yet seen the register / BTs for myself; I don't know how clear they are, if Ann could have been mis-read for Agnes or vice-versa, but I suspect an error in the register or transcription, and that Ann and Agnes are one. Since we also have the name Ann appearing at the burial of her son John (which shows she was Ann Fox), and a burial, and a baptism, but nothing else for Agnes, if I am right and the 2 are one then it would seem that the correct name is Ann, not Agnes.
Of course another possibility is that Ann had died, and James had remarried to an Agnes. But a widow named Ann was buried in 1676/7, no burial of an Agnes found. But given that Ann's father was Tho I expect the name Tho was after his maternal grandfather.
** The fact I haven't seen the PRs for myself means I have no feel for how likely there are to be entries missing from the transcripts - i.e. are they in good conditions, or are parts of pages missing or unreadable? If they're fine, my lumping together of Ann and Agnes is more likely, if there are fair number of unreadable entries that could explain why e.g. there's only one entry referring to Agnes **
