    • While there were many Marys and Mary Anns, this Mary was unusual in having two middle names. This makes me sure that the Mary A E Austen I have found in the 1851 census, a shoe binder, is the daughter of Daniel and Mary (As well as being the right name, she was still living in Margate, birthplace shown as Margate and was the right age; in addition I know that her uncle Robert had a niece who in 1847 had the name Mary Austen).

I am less certain about her husband and children. I have yet to find a marriage, or to find Mary in the 1841 census. A William and Mary Austen had 3 children baptised in Margate in 1813; this Mary being then aged about 24 was old enough to have 3 children. In addition, William was a shoemaker, which ties in with Mary's 1851 occupation of shoe binder.
