William HINES
Set As Default Person -
Name William HINES Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1807 Hickleson, Suffolk, England
- Found a William Hines in Tower Hamlets in the 1851 census, a mariner and a widower so fits as Sarah's widower - and a suitable age.
Age given as 43, address as 28 Regent Road, Mile End Old Town (Trinity parish)
According to the 1851 census - if I have the right William Hines - but I haven't found any such place.
Perhaps it is a lost village - due to de-population or the encroachment of the sea?
(Nearest I found name-wise is Ickleton in Cambridgeshire, on the Essex border but quite near Suffolk)
Possibly on the coast - most likely place for a mariner to come from?
Gender Male Occupation From 1841 to 1851 Mariner / Rigger - In the 1841 census his wife's entry shows "Mariners wife". He was not with his family - probably because at sea.
In the 1851 census his 2 older sons are recorded as "Son of a Rigger (journeyman)" and his daughter and I believe his youngest son as "Daughter / Son of a Sailor".
An 1885 advert* for riggers described their work "Duties are made up of running and dismantling rigging of ships and they
would be expected to be able to splice any size of rope..." so it seems that riggers were mariners with specialist skills.
