Gender Male Move Abt 1741 Devonport, Devon, England
Occupation Lady Modyford’s School, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England
[1, 2] Schoolmaster - Was it this Stephen or his father who was schoolmaster?
According to Northmore Newsletter, issue 7 p.30 Stephen husband of Thomasin Northmore was a schoolmaster. However, "The book of Buckland Monachorum and Yelverton" shows Stephen Jutsham becoming headmaster in 1711. This Stephen was only aged about 5 in that year and I believe it is when his father, who shared the same name, died. There are no more head teachers shown until 1850. Although the school was found to be in a ruinous state in 1830 and had to be shut for repairs, there must have been more headteachers before then. Maybe Stephen senior died shortly after being appointed and his son was later appointed to the same position, maybe this Stephen never was headmaster, or maybe there is simply a mistake in the book.
I don't know what the original source is but apparently a school history was written some years ago which mentions Stephen. I will contact the school and see what I can find out.
Although now converted into private housing, the original school building still exists, adjoining the churchyard wall; it is a listed building and described on the websites in the sources.
Died Abt May 1747 Stoke Damerel, Devon, England
- (assumed from burial)
Buried 6 May 1747 The Parish Church, Stoke Damerel, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP):
"Stephen Jetson was Buried May 6th 1747, affidavit May 7th"
Well before the grave robbers were active in this churchyard (in the early C19th), but if his place of rest was not so restful then, it was disturbed again in 1788 when a murder tookplace in the churchyard. At least that occurring after his death spared him having to see the remains of the murders rotting in a cage for 7 years!
(I believe the human remains were removed when the churchyard was made into a park but Stephen was probably well decayed and part of the soil by then)
