Gender Male Church Office Sheepstor, Devon, England Parish Clerk - For 40 years, according to a note about him in Northmore Newsletter issue 4 (March 1991)
Parish Clerk was usually an office for life, but John may have been replaced when he had to move into the Union Workhouse in Tavistock somewhere between 1891 and his death. Probably appointed in the 1850s.
Residence 1841 Shop tenament, Sheepstor, Devon, England - In the 1841 census with his father, who was shown as aged 80, of Independent means. John was shown as an Ag. Lab., aged 38 - i.e. it appears age was not rounded down, but as he was baptised in 1798 it was, but to the wrong number!
Died 5 Feb 1896 The Union Workhouse, Tavistock, Devon, England - Commemorated with a gravestone, gives age as 97 (have photo)
Note written in the back of John's diary (the last entry), signed by one I Andrew, said to be a nephew (by another nephew, WSN, noted in Northmore Newsletter)
"This is to Certify that John Northmore Died in Tavistock Union on Febry. 4th 1896 Aged 97 Buried at Sheepstor on Febry. 8th 1896 He was Baptised in Sheepstor Church on Septr. 12th 1798"
