  • Name James NORTHMORE

Baptised 25 Nov 1764  St. Peter’s Church, Meavy, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • From the PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 23 Sep 2012):
James the son of Richard Northmore & Ann his wife was baptiz'd Novr: the 25th. 1764
    Gender Male
    Occupation 1837
    Carrier
    • Shown as a carrier when his daughter Rosamond married
    Residence 1841
    • At the time of the 1841 census a Richard Northmore, aged 76 [sic - not rounded down] was recorded as living with James' daughter Rosamond and her husband. Whilst it would not be unusal for a neice to be looking after an elderly uncle, the age does not fit and I believe it was a mistake in the census and should have read James.
The information here regarding his residence and occupation in 1841 assumes I am correct about this.
    Occupation 1841
    Ind.
    • James had presumably retired and was of independant means by 1841.

    • Date / place from Dartmoor Press info., same on DFHS CD

Bapt of William shows him as the son of "Richard junior and Ann", so it must have been this Richard who married Ann Creber.
In 1751 a Richard married Thomazin Ash; she appears to have died in  1756 (bur 21 Feb) - was that this Richard or his father?
It seems highly improbable a newly widowed Richard would marry the next day (probably impossible, given the requirement for banns or licence) so I think it was this Richard's father who married Thomazin Ash. His father had been widowed in 1750, I think in his 50s, so his remarrying around that time was not an unlikely occurrence.
