Benjamin SPURRELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Benjamin SPURRELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 20 Jan 1763 St. Peter’s Church, Meavy, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 29 Aug 2012):
Benjamin the son of Thomas Spurrel & Mary his wife was baptiz'd January the 20th
Gender Male Residence 1833 Granby Street, Stoke Damerel, Devon, England
- Abode at the time of his death.
Died 2 Jun 1833 - Date from gravestone, as recorded on PWDRO website - has low quality (i.e. mostly unreadable) pictures of the stone.
The stone is to Benjamin, his daughter Eleanor Thomas, his wife Eleanor and a John Thomas, probably step-son of his daughter. Although Benjamin and his wife died before their daughter she is listed first - I guess her husband John had the stone erected after her death.
Benjamin is shown as Benjamin Spurrell, died 2 June 1833, aged 71.
Buried 6 Jun 1833 The Parish Church, Stoke Damerel, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 29 Aug 2012):

Will 6 Jul 1833 - In TNA catalogue:

William SPURRELL, b. Est 1690, d. Yes, date unknown (Grandfather)
Mary NOTT, b. Est 1683, d. Apr 1767, Bickleigh, nr Plymth, Devon, England
(Age ~ 84 years) (Grandmother)
Notes - The age at death suggests the rope layer who died in Stoke Damerel was Benjamin, the son of Thomas and Mary.
But there was also a Benjamin who married in Yealmpton in 1782 (to one Mary Cornish) - where this one married in 1793.
Was it the first marriage of this Benjamin? There was a Benjamin who was born c 1782 who subsequently lived and died (or was at least buried) in Yealmpton - it would seem likely he was the son of Benjamin and Mary. This Benjamin died in 1832 which would explain why he is not mentioned in the will of Benjamin senior, written in 1833, if he was his father. But why is there no mention of his children either? That does seem strange and suggest that maybe the 2 Yealmpton marriages of a Benjamin Spurrell are of different Benjamins.
It would be sufficient of a coincidence, though, that I am inclined to think that they were the 2 marriages of one Benjamin, and that there was some other reason his son's children are omitted from the will. If Benjamin snr was for some years a widower between his marriages maybe his son's grandparents brought him up and provided well for him and his offspring.

Family 1 Mary CORNISH, d. Yes, date unknown Banns of marriage From 18 Aug 1782 to 8 Sep 1782 St. Bartholomew’s Church, Yealmpton, Devon, England
- Shows both were of Yealmpton
Married Abt 14 Sep 1782 St. Bartholomew’s Church, Yealmpton, Devon, England
- Date an estimate based on dates of reading of banns, and since both were 'of Yealmpton' when the banns were read and the marriage was post-Hardwicke I'm assuming they married in Yealmpton.
BUT - did they marry at all? - from the docs indexed here it appears there was a maintenance order in 1785 for Benjamin to maintain the illegitimate child of Mary Cornish.

Married 12 Feb 1793 St. Bartholomew’s Church, Yealmpton, Devon, England
- From DFHS index (on FMP, viewed 29 Aug 2012), not seen PR entry
In 1814 an Eleanor Spurrell was a witness at the wedding of a Mary Ann Spurrell to Wm Lucas in Stoke Damerel - possibly Mary Ann was another dau of Benjamin (though not mentioned in his will - suggests if she was his dau she may have pre-deceased him). Far from unknown for a cousin to be a witness, though. (Eleanor did have a cousin Mary Ann who could have marr in 1814, though she was bapt in 1777 so older than average for 1st marr)
