  Notes	(Research):Probate was given to a Frederick Lay; given that he was not a solicitor or similar, but a gas fitter, he was probably a family member. Probably most likely male with different surname would be brother, son-in-law or nephew. Given that he was retired brother seems most likely, suggesting Theresa's maiden name may have been Lay. Checking for Theresa Lay in BMD index show it was a very rare name, the birth of one was registered in q4 1859, matching exactly the age from the death registration index. There is no death in the BMD index (FreeBMD, covering England and Wales) suggesting she 'married' or left the country (there is also no marriage). The 1871 and 1881 censuses show that Theresa Lay had a brother Frederick. It seems fairly safe to conclude that the Theresa recorded at death as Theresa Goatham was born Theresa Lay. Since writing the above I have found Theresa and her husband George in the 1911 census, when they were with an Eliza Lay, described as 'mother', clearly Theresa's mother, not George's.
