  • Name Caroline HOLCOMB
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Abt 1818  Boxgrove, Sussex, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Gender Female
    Disability Deaf
    • There was a column on the census form which should have indicated deafness from 1851. There is nothing to indicate that Caroline was deaf in 1851 or 1861, but in 1871 she was recorded as "deaf from birth"! She was also recorded as deaf in 1881.

Was a mistake made in 1871? Possibly, but I think it more likely that she was born with a hearing defect, not severe enough to be noted in the earlier censuses, but which had become significant by 1871.
Occupation From 1851 to 1881  Boxgrove, Sussex, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

    • Recorded as a washer woman in 1851 and 1861 censuses, as a laundress in 1871 and 1881.
Died Jun Q 1890  Westhampnett Reg Dist, Sussex, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

    • From SFHG db, accessed 17 Jun 2012
Entry shows MARTLEW, Caroline, aged 78
(I suspect the entry shows her age as 73 - a 3 can easily look like an 8)
    Siblings 2 sisters
    Patriarch & Matriarch
James HACOM,   d. Yes, date unknown  (2 x Great Grandfather)
Mary INKPEN,   b. Abt 1722,   d. 1787, Boxgrove, Sussex, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location  (Age ~ 65 years)  (Great Grandmother)
    Notes
    • (Research):Described as daughter of Joseph Bailey in the 1851 census - though this could have been inaccurate and meant step-dau (Joseph was the husband of Caroline's mother Elizabeth)
Living in same house but separate household to widower Joseph Bayley in 1861

Although I have attached Caroline's 3 illegitimate children attached to one unknown father, they may have had 2  different fathers (can't be 3 fathers as 2 of the children were twins!).

    • Caroline had a Holcomb illegit dau in 1852/3 and was a widow by 1861.
The 1861 census shows her as "Caroline Bennett" but the 1871 and 1881 censuses give her surname as Martlew, as does the registration of her death, so she does not appear to have remarried after James died.
