Abt 1722, d. 1787, Boxgrove, Sussex, England (Age ~ 65 years) (Mother) Notes - (Research):Tony Holkham, descended from Richard and Hannah, sees this Richard as likely to be his ancestor but considers that there are other contenders, so I could have this wrong. Without knowing anything about the other contenders I can't properly weigh up the evidence but the things for / against this Richard are:
- His son William gave Richard's age as death when he registered it, when the baptism of this Richard would suggest he was only 73 - but this need not have been accurate.
Experience has told me that the most popular names for a man's first two sons (in past times) are his own and his fathers, in either order. Richard gave his own name to his second son and named his first James, making this the most likely name of his father. - Tony Holkham has found a removal order for Richard and his family from Angmering to West Tarring in 1793, though says it was quashed later that year. I have not seen these documents, but there must have been some reason for thinking West Tarring was the place Richard had a right to settle and receive support from the parish if needed.
When born Richard would have inherited his place of settlement from his father, and would have changed with any changes to his father's until he was considered old enough to be independent - usually from the age of 14. He may have done nothing since, though, to acquire a different place. If he had completed an apprenticeship the place he did this would have become his place of settlement, but the register of duties paid for apprentices' indentures does not seem to have an entry for him, and so he may not have served one.
James' married in West Tarring and his first two children were baptised there. He could well have inherited or acquired that as his place of settlement, and hence it cold well have been Richard's when he was born. However, since the family seems to have subsequently lived in Percham and in Graffham, and after this James' daughter Mary's marriage licence shows him as a husbandman, one might have expected James to acquire one of these other places as his place of settlement while Richard was still dependent on him. It may be though that James was renting or leasing too little land, and didn't serve in a parish office and did nothing else that would have changed the place.
At least we know of a definite link of the family with West Tarring and can see how it might have become Richard's place of settlement.
