  1. 1.  Dorothy Henrietta GOATHAM was born on 1 Nov 1919 in 107, Magpie Hall Road, Chatham, Kent, England (daughter of William George Arthur GOATHAM and Christina (“Cissy”) Margaret WRIGHT); died on 1 Aug 1976 in Kingston-Upon-Thames Reg Dist, Surrey, England.

    Other Events:

    • Administration: 1 Dec 1976, London, England

    Notes:

(Research):Probably in Scotland with her parents by the time of the 1939 registration

    Birth:
GRO ref: Goatham, Dorothy H q4 1919 mother's maiden name: Wright, Medway RD 2a 1449; GRO online index shows middle name as Henrietta
Actual date from death registration index and from birth register entry (GRO copy)
The informant for the birth was one A. E. Ruby, present at the birth. Looking in the 1921 census shows that this was Ann Elizabeth Ruby, a by then 39 year old, wife of a skilled bricklayer, employed by the Admiralty Royal Naval Hospital in Gillingham. Since Dorothy's father also worked for the RN, as a shipwirght, maybe her parents knew the Rubys through the naval link or as neighbours. It is not clear if Ann Ruby was a midwife or simply present for support.

    Birth:
Date from age in death registration index - given as 85 when he died, i.e. born 1886 or 1887.
Actual date from Royal Navy service record (catalogue entry)
Place from 1911 census, where age given as 23 i.e. born 1887 or 1888; also in RN service record..
GRO ref: BELL, William George A q3 1887 Sheppey RD 2a 901; GRO online index shows forenames as William George Arthur and mother's maiden name as Goatham
Parents named in marriage registration (married as a Goatham, no mention of Bell) - 'John Henry Goatham' and 'Henrietta McGeorge'. Almost certainly made up / adjusted to hide his illegitimacy.

    Occupation:
At the time of his marriage

    Residence:
At the time of the 1921 census William's wife and daughter were staying with his mother, but he was not present. The address at which his daughter had been born about 18 months earlier does not appear to have been the family's home, and certainly he was not there in 1921.
    Maybe in navy accomodation?

    Cremation:
From burial record data as transcribed on DeceasedOnline website (viewed before Oct 2016)

    Died:
    Date from cremation record.
Place from Scotland's People which shows him as William George GOATHAM, but with the other surname of BELL, aged 85.

    Notes:

    Birth:
From age given when death registered (84) and 24 years and 3 months in the 1921 census, which suggest c. March 1897, but shown as 5 in the 1901 census, which suggests a year earlier.
Her forename was recorded as Cissy in the 1921 census.

    Residence:
At the time of her marriage

    Occupation:
Shown as her last occupation and employer in the 1921 census. Given that it was in Falkirk, it must be before she left there, which was in 1919, between her marriage in March and the birth of her daughter in Nov. Possibly she gave up work on marriage.

    Cremation:

    Died:

Abode Bredgar, father George shown as a carpenter. Shown as born July 1865

    Occupation:
Kelly's Directory of Kent, Surrey & Sussex, 1891 shows on p.291 a "Goatham Henrietta (Miss), greengrocer, 43 Medway road" - in the Gillingham section.
I think this can only be this Henrietta, but need to try to find her in the 1891 census.

    Residence:
With her parents and her son, strangely recorded as 'Victor'

    Occupation:
Still 'housekeeper' to James McGeorge, possibly a cover for them living as a couple although not married.
Also now a 'feather dresser', rather than a milliner, and working for herself.

    Died:
    GRO ref: PHELIPPAULT, Henrietta aged 72 q1 1938 Medway RD 2a 1207
Died the same quarter as her husband.
Place of death from burial register

    Buried:
From transcribed data from burial register (on KFHS CD 40)

    Notes:

    Married:
Given that Henrietta's son William was registered as a BELL when he was born I guess that she was in a relationship with a Mr Bell at the time, but there appears to have been no marriage, and by the time William was 3, when the 1891 census took place, Henrietta and William were back living with her parents.
When he married William gave his father's name as John Henry GOATHAM. Those who were illegitimate often seem to have made up names to hide their illigetimacy, but were John Henry the Christian names of his real father?
No, buying a copy of William's birth registration shows is father was William Richard BELL, and this cannot have been a husband invented by Henrietta for decency's sake as it was William Richard who registered his son's birth.

    Children:
    1. 2. William George Arthur GOATHAM was born on 13 Jun 1887 in 77, Hope Street, Sheerness, Sheppey, Kent, England; died on 5 Jul 1972 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Shown as aged 25 at marriage

    Occupation:
According to his daughter Christina's marriage record; simply recorded as a clothier when he married, as was his father.

    Died:
Shown as deceased when his daughter Christina married
Details from entry in statutory register

Andrew married Mary Johnston GRAHAM on 2 Dec 1886 in Larbert, Stirling, Scotland. Mary was born about 1860 in Airth, Stirling, Scotland; and died. [Family Group Page] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Mary Johnston GRAHAM was born about 1860 in Airth, Stirling, Scotland; and died.

  1. 8.  John BELL was born about 1826 in Sheerness, Sheppey, Kent, England; died on 11 Jun 1900 in 25, Shakespeare Road, New Brompton, Kent, England.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: 1871, H. M. Dockyard, Sheerness, Sheppey, Kent, England; Rigger
    • Administration with Will: 14 Jul 1900, London, England; Calendar entry

    Notes:

    Birth:
From the 1871 census where shown as aged 44

    Administration with Will:
"Bell John of 25 Shakespeare-road New Brompton Kent naval-pensioner died 11 June Administration (with Will) London 14 July to William Richard Bell coal-agent Effects £322."

    Died:
In the 1891 census, not found in censuses after that. Looking at John Bells died in Kent, born 1823-1829 the most likely is:
    GRO ref: Bell, John q2 1900 aged 75 Medway RD 2a 416
(None were in Sheppey RD; I have not tried to match the death against other John Bells in the censuses, but admon. was granted to a William Richard Bell, so almost certainly the death was this John Bell.)
Actual date and place from probate calendar entry.

John married Elizabeth WORSFOLD on 3 Dec 1860 in St. John the Evangelist’s Church, Lambeth, London, England. Elizabeth was born on 20 Jul 1827 in Tower Hill, London, England; was christened on 19 Aug 1827 in St. Botolph’s Church, Aldgate, London, England; died between 1871 and 1881. Notes:

    Birth:
About 1829 from the 1871 census where shown as aged 41 and the 1861 census where shown as aged 31.
However, her marriage PR entry shows that her father was William, a book binder which suggests the following is her baptism. Also, the family's abode at the time of her baptism was in Tower Hill which is shown as her birthplace in a census.

    Baptised:
From PR entry (image on Ancestry, viewed 29 Jan 2020)
"1827 Augt. 19. / Born 20th. July 1827 No. 1792. Elizabeth Daur. of William & Maria Worsfold, abode: 13, Queen Street Tower hill, father's occupation: Book-binder"

    Died:
    Probably:
GRO ref: BELL, Elizabeth q4 1872 aged 32 Sheppey RD 2a 419 (GRO online index also shows aged as 32 so very unlikely to be due to an indexing error)
The 1871 census shows Elizabeth as aged 41, the 1881 census shows her husband as a widower.
No other death likely to be this Elizabeth in the GRO index (FreeBMD) between 1871 and 1881.

1839 - on his son William's marriage PR entry (and his 1891 remarriage)
    1841 - census
    1851 census
1853 - son Thomas' marr cert
Shown as a retired carpenter in the 1871 census.

    Residence:
With his second wife Lucy and 4 children (all from his second marriage - George,Thomas,Michael and Mary).

    Occupation:
George may well have been the Parish Clerk up until he left Bredgar, probably in the 1860s, unless he was suffering from ill-health before this. Usually it was a post for life, but George left the parish before this. The PRs may gives clues as to when he became the parish clerk and when he ceased to act as such - not yet studied. Certainly by 1843, the earliest record of which I know so far recording his in this role.
At the same time as carpenter - recorded as such at baptism of his youngest in 1843, also 1851 census and when his wife Lucy died (given as his sole occupation on her death cert.)

    Occupation:
I think it was probably the George Goatham who church accounts show to have been paid in 1844 for making changes to the gallery to accomodate the organ.

    Residence:
With his daughter Rebecca. His son George and family were the next household recorded in the census.

    Notes:

(Research):When she married daughter Rose Hannah named her father as William Millen, Gentleman. The name is almost certainly a fiction, the status probably made up too, though it is possible a member of the gentry fathered Elizabeth's children.
The middle name Kincaid / Kincad may be a clue to the father - it could be his surname.

Shows William son of Edmund and Elizabeth LEEDS
I have no plans to continue the family further back and so have down little investigation into the LEEDS family. I can see on Ancestry trees those that show parents for William show a different couple. However, I can also see that this is based on assuming the William living in Woodchurch in 1841 was the son of this William. There was another William living in Brabourne who is a 'better fit' and who others also take to be the son of this William!
Hence I think it most likely that the baptism in Mersham is that of this William.

"April 12. William Leeds - buried - Affid:"

William married Jane HIGHSTEAD on 4 Mar 1783 in St. Mary’s Church, Smeeth, Kent, England. Jane (daughter of John HIGHSTEAD and Elizabeth BAYLEY) was christened on 19 Dec 1762 in St. Martin’s Church, Aldington, Kent, England; was buried on 18 Jul 1835 in St. John the Baptist Church, Mersham, Kent, England. [Family Group Page] [Family Chart]

  4. 43.  Jane HIGHSTEAD was christened on 19 Dec 1762 in St. Martin’s Church, Aldington, Kent, England (daughter of John HIGHSTEAD and Elizabeth BAYLEY); was buried on 18 Jul 1835 in St. John the Baptist Church, Mersham, Kent, England.

    Other Events:

    • Residence: 1783, Smeeth, Kent, England

    Notes:

    Baptised:
No baptism of a Jane Hi(gh)ste(a)d (etc. - variants beginning with 'H') found other than one baptised in Kingsnorth in 1764* but there is this baptism of a Jane Isted. The date suggests a date of birth which agrees with the age given at the burial of the Jane Leeds who was probably this Jane. Also, it was in Aldington, and the Jane Leeds who died in 1835 left a will appointing as her executor someone from Aldington, suggesting she may have had a link with that parish. (Also, there is no other marriage or burial of a Jane Isted within 20 miles of Aldington in the index on FMP, as at 21 Nov 2019, who could be this Jane).

From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 21 Nov 2019)
"Jane Daughr. of John & Elizth. Isted bapd. Decr: the 19th."

    * - it seems unlikely the Jane who married William Leeds was the one baptised in Kingsnorth, but she could be. The other Jane seems to have married Samuel Clover in Mersham in 1790, when she was of Willesborough and Samuel of Mersham. They had two children baptised in Mersham, but both appear to have been buried in Sevington.
There is some fairly slight evidence against from the places - neither Jane was 'of' the place they had been baptised at the time of their marriages, but it is more likely that the Jane baptised in Kingsnorth was later 'of' the adjacent parish of Willesborough, whilst the Jane baptised in Aldington was 'of' the adjacent parish of Smeeth when she married. However, all the parishes are close enough it could have been the other way around. Both the burial record and death registration for Jane Clover are consistent with a 1764 baptism, as is the 1841 census which failed to round down her age and gives it as 77. Jane Leeds died too early for her death to be registered but the age recorded in the burial register is consistent with her Dec 1762 baptism - provided she had been born after July. Neither Jane would have been 21 by March 1783, judging by the dates of baptism and recorded ages at death, so the marriage should show parental consent, which it does not. It seems more likely that the Jane baptised Aldington, only a few months short of 21, was claiming to be of age rather than Jane baptised Kingsnorth, probably just turned 19 (or did Jane from Aldington not need consent as both her parents were dead?).
With 3 arguments favouring the Jane baptised Aldington I think it reasonable to conclude that is who married William Leeds. (Too peripheral to this tree to pursue further, but looking at the names of siblings / aunts / uncles, to see if there seem to be any names used by the Clover and Leeds couples might help).
