  1. 1.  John SMITH, [Parents?] was born est 1540 (son of Edmund SMITH and Margarie); died about Jun 1614 in Charleton, Devon, England; was buried on 7 Jun 1614 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Estimate of date based on date of first (known) marriage.
I don't know for certain that John was the son of Edmund, but given that John's son Richard named his oldest known son Edmund I think that was probably a close relationship.

    Died:
    Date from date of burial.
Chancery Court bill of 1618 refers to his death: "the said John Smyth about five yeres sythens dyed", suggesting about 1613.

John married Joane ANGEIR on 18 Oct 1568 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England. Joane was buried on 19 Oct 1570 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England. [Family Group Page] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. James SMITH was buried on 13 Mar 1628/29 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England.
    2. Katheren SMITH was christened in 1570 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England; and died.

John married Margery EARLE on 4 Jul 1574 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England. Margery was born about 1538; died about Sep 1637 in Charleton, Devon, England; was buried on 2 Oct 1637 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England. [Family Group Page] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Married:
Date not certain: year and day legible, month not clear.

Chancery Court case of 1618 mentions "by his deed bearinge date the last day of February in the Twentyeth yere of the Raigne of our late soveraigne Ladye Queene Elizabeth in consideracon of the intermaryage betwixt him & the said Margery" and "itt ys now full fortye yeares sythens the said Convayance was made" [it is now full forty years since the said Conveyance was made]
Both these agree in making the date of the arrangement about 1578; the former reference gives the precise date of 28 Feb 1577/78.

    Children:
    1. Richard SMITH was born between 1575 and 1595; died in 1635 in Charleton, Devon, England; was buried in 1635 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England.

Gen.: 2

  1. 2.  Edmund SMITH was born est 1512 (son of John SMITH); died in 1572 in Charleton, Devon, England; was buried on 23 Dec 1572 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England.

    Other Events:

    • Marriage Settlement: 1531; Of Alice Smyth - his sister?

    Notes:

I am just speculating that the 3 Smiths shown here as siblings were such, all children of Edmund, as they were married around the same time. They could, though have been first cousins or second cousins or ...

    Birth:
** I am only guessing that Edmond was the son of John **
(due to marriage settlement for Alice, John's daughter)

    Marriage Settlement:
An Edmond Smyth of Charleton was party to a marriage settlement for Alice, wife of Thomas Wodmanston and daughter of John Smyth of Charleton. I am guessing that John was probably dead, hence Edmond's involvement; if it was the same Edmund who died in 1572, i.e. young enough to live another 41 years, then I suspect he was the brother of the Alice involved.

    3. Wilmoth SMITH was born est 1554; and died.

Gen.: 3

  1. 4.  John SMITH was born est 1484; and died.

    Notes:

John was the father of an Alice for whom a marriage settlement was arranged in 1531; though named as her father John was not involved so most likely had died by then. An Edmund Smyth was involved, I guess he may have been her brother, as tentatively shown on this tree.

    Children:
    1. Alice SMITH and died.
    2. 2. Edmund SMITH was born est 1512; died in 1572 in Charleton, Devon, England; was buried on 23 Dec 1572 in St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England.
