Ex[aminatur] \/s<\/div>\n<h4>My translation of the Probate statement:<\/h4>\n<div class=\"transcribed-doc\">[The above written will was proved at London<br>\nbefore the worshipful Sir Henry Marten Knight Doctor of Laws, Master, Keeper<br>\nor Commissary of the <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Prerogative Court of Canterbury&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Abbreviated to PCC.&amp;lt;br \/&amp;gt;In England in the past a lot of things were dealt with in church courts. These were mainly those of an Archdeacon, Bishop or Archbishop. The latter was called a &amp;#039;prerogative court&amp;#039;. The main way in which these church courts are relevant to family histories are in that they granted administration (admon.) (where there was no will or admin with will in a few special circumstances), and probate of wills, up to Jan. 1858.&amp;lt;br \/&amp;gt;Property in one Archdeaconry could be dealt with in an(...)&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/teresa-goatham.me.uk\/genealogy\/glossary\/prerogative-court-of-canterbury\/\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>Prerogative Court of Canterbury<\/a> lawfully constituted The last day of the month of April in the Year<br>\nof Our Lord One thousand six hundred and thirty two by the Oath of Sir Francis Glanvill Knight<br>\nson of the said deceased and Executor named in this Will To whom was committed administration<br>\nof all and singular the goods, rights and credits of the said deceased well and faithfully to Adminster<br>\nthe same He being sworn on God&rsquo;s Holy Gospels before John Polwhele Cleric by force of a commission in this<br>\nregard issued elsewhere [or at another time] ]<\/div>\n<h4>Witnesses:<\/h4>\n<p>John Glanville: probably neither of the living Johns mentioned in the will, as they did not live nearby, unless they were visiting their mother \/ grandmother as she seemed close to death. Possibly more likely is Alice&rsquo;s husband&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a class=\"reltree\" title=\"Relationship to possible witness John Glanville\" href=\"https:\/\/teresa-goatham.me.uk\/genealogy\/relationship.php?altprimarypersonID=&amp;savedpersonID=I19965&amp;secondpersonID=&amp;maxrels=5&amp;disallowspouses=0&amp;generations=55&amp;tree=tree1&amp;primarypersonID=I21508\">great nephew<\/a> with the name, who was also Alice&rsquo;s nephew (since her sister Mary had married her husband&rsquo;s nephew). He was born and grew up in Launceston, if still there close enough that he may have been a witness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Jane Glanvill: probably her <a class=\"female\" title=\"Jane Glanville's 'person page'\" href=\"https:\/\/teresa-goatham.me.uk\/genealogy\/getperson.php?personID=I21919&amp;tree=tree1\">granddaughter<\/a>, daughter of her son Francis. She married about 10 months after the will was written, but was still a Glanville at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">John Elford: presumably her servant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Dewnes Glanvill: probably another <a class=\"female\" title=\"Dionis Glanville's 'person page'\" href=\"https:\/\/teresa-goatham.me.uk\/genealogy\/getperson.php?personID=I21417&amp;tree=tree1\">granddaughter<\/a>, also a daughter of her son Francis. She married in 1635 so was still a Glanville at the time the will was written.<\/p>\n<h4>Footnotes:<\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\">[1] The description of John Elford as being Alice&rsquo;s servant should not be taken to mean he was a domestic servant. People with all sorts of occupations might be described as a servant at this time if they worked for another. His being named with Alice in at least one Chancery Court case, where he was described as a &lsquo;gent&rsquo; may suggest he managed her estates \/ property.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;TNA&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Abbreviation for The National Archives, this being the official government archives of England, Wales and the United Kingdom.
